My scientific career started with my PhD at the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology of the Spanish Research Council (ICTP-CSIC) in 1989 thanks to a pre-doctoral grant. I continued my training with a national and later an European grant at University of Manchester-Institute of Science and Technology (UK) under the supervision of Prof. Anthony Ryan, where I increased my knowledge on polyurethanes and trained in the characterization of polymer morphology using Synchrotron radiation. Back to ICTP-CSIC in 1995, I consolidated the "Polyurethanes" line focusing on the study of non-toxic biodegradable polyurethanes. Within this line I started a collaboration with University of Guanajuato (Mexico) that is still very active today and that allowed me to stablish a network of collaborations all over Mexico. In the last years, the "Polyurethanes" line has also been redirected to the study of self-repairing materials, to 3D printing of elastomeric materials, hydroponic foams and to the preparation of more sustainable materials through the use of recycled materials (we have developed a methodology to obtain polyols from from PET waste) or from renewable sources. My research lines can be summerized as follows: i) Development of high-performance elastomeric materials; ; ii) Synthesis of polyurethanes for advanced applications; iii) Preparation of high selectivity polymeric membranes for gas separation.
