Abstract The problem of Open Dumping site (ODs) is multi-caused, mainly due to deficiencies in the system of collection, treatment and final disposal of solid waste but also due to the lack of environmental awareness, which contributes to increasing their presence in different points. The objective was to identify ODs distributed in the municipal capital of Técpan de Galeana and surroundings areas, in order to determine the socio-environmental risk and the category in which they are located. To analyze the situation of the landfills, variables of topography, climatology, meteorology and waste generation were taken into account; With respect to the social analysis, the size of the dumps, location, types of waste and environmental environment, as well as socioeconomic activities such as garbage separation, burning and animal husbandry were also considered. Finally, a random sample of 50 kg of the different types of residues was taken and the risk was analyzed with respect to agricultural areas, water bodies and population margin. The results revealed twelve open dumping site, ten of these represent a high risk and two a moderate risk. Based on the weightings for each one, whose status is high risk, the immediate closure of these sites is recommended.
