Vera V. Budaeva is the Chief of the Bioconversion Laboratory at the Institute for Problems of Chemical and Energetic Technologies, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPCET SB RAS), and has a doctoral degree in chemistry (Ph.D.). She is an Associate Professor specializing in lignocellulosic biomass conversion and biomass pretreatment methods for the production of value-added bio-based products. She is conducting research in the fields of plant feedstock chemistry, functionalization of cellulose and natural polymers, microbiology, and biotechnology. Her studies focus on the synthesis and properties of cellulose nitrates from alternative sources and the development of technologies for high-tech biotechnology products such as ethanol and bacterial cellulose. She was the principal investigator in the Russian Science Foundation project no. 17-19-01054 titled “Fundamental Engineering Aspects of Production Technology of Bacterial Nanocellulose from Easily Renewable Cellulosic Biomass” in 2017–2021 and achieved high-priority results when upscaling bacterial nanocellulose technology. She has gained a wealth of experience in exploring the potentialities of miscanthus conversion through chemical and biotechnology techniques and is currently an investigator in the Russian Science Foundation project no. 22-13-00107 titled "Fundamental Approaches to the Conversion of Industrial Crop Miscanthus into Valuable Materials and Bio-based Products to Minimize Carbon Footprint."
