Carlito Baltazar Tabelin is a Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and the Acting Executive Director of the Research Institute of Engineering at Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology. He also serves as an environmental geochemist competent in the fields of inorganic contaminant geochemistry, rock–soil–water interactions, geochemical and reactive transport modeling, electrochemistry, mine waste management, and the prevention/control of acid mine/rock drainage (AMD/ARD). He earned his Ph.D. in Field Engineering for the Environment from Hokkaido University, Japan, in 2011. He worked in the Faculty of Engineering of Hokkaido University, Japan, as a postdoctoral researcher and assistant professor from 2011 to 2019. Dr. Tabelin moved to Australia in early 2019 and worked at the School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) as Lecturer of Mine Waste Management Engineering until 2022. His current research projects include adding value to mine wastes for sustainable management, AMD/ARD prevention and control, the remediation of contaminated sites, and the recovery of valuable metals from electronic and industrial wastes. His areas of expertise are mineral–water interactions, environmental geochemistry, mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, and mine waste management.
