According to current research, machine learning algorithms have been proven to be effective in detecting both optical and non-optical parameters of water quality. The use of satellite remote sensing is a valuable method for monitoring long-term changes in the quality of lake water. In this study, Sentinel-2 MSI images and in situ data from the Dianshan Lake area from 2017 to 2023 were used. Four machine learning methods were tested, and optimal detection models were determined for each water quality parameter. It was ultimately determined that these models could be applied to long-term images to analyze the spatiotemporal variations and distribution patterns of water quality in Dianshan Lake. Based on the research findings, integrated learning algorithms, especially CatBoost, have achieved good results in the retrieval of all water quality parameters. Spatiotemporal analysis reveals that the overall distribution of water quality parameters is uneven, with significant spatial variations. Permanganate index (CODMn), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorus (TP) show relatively small interannual differences, generally exhibiting a decreasing trend in concentrations. In contrast, chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), dissolved oxygen (DO), and Secchi Disk Depth (SDD) exhibit significant interannual and inter-year differences. Chl-a reached its peak in 2020, followed by a decrease, while DO and SDD showed the opposite trend. Further analysis indicated that the distribution of water quality parameters is significantly influenced by climatic factors and human activities such as agricultural expansion. Overall, there has been an improvement in the water quality of Dianshan Lake. The study demonstrates the feasibility of accurately monitoring water quality even without measured spectral data, using machine learning methods and satellite reflectance data. The research results presented in this paper can provide new insights into water quality monitoring and water resource management in Dianshan Lake.

Non-optically active water quality parameters in water bodies are important evaluation indicators in monitoring urban water quality. Over the past years, satellite remote sensing techniques have increasingly been used to assess different types of substances in urban water bodies. However, it is challenging to retrieve accurate data for some of the non-optically active water quality parameters from satellite images due to weak spectral characteristics. This study aims to examine the potential of ZY1-02D hyperspectral images in retrieving non-optical active water quality parameters, including dissolved oxygen (DO), permanganate index (CODMn), and total phosphorus (TP) in urban rivers and lakes. We first simulated the in situ measured reflectance to the satellite equivalent reflectance using the ZY1-02D and Sentinel-2 spectral response function. Further, we used four machine learning models to compare the retrieval performance of these two sensors with different bandwidths. The mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) are 24.28%, 18.44%, and 37.04% for DO, CODMn, and TP, respectively, and the root mean square errors (RMSE) are 1.67, 0.96, and 0.07 mg/L, respectively. Finally, we validated the accuracy and consistency of aquatic products retrieved from ZY1-02D and Sentinel-2 images. The remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) products of ZY1-02D are slightly overestimated compared to Sentinel-2 Rrs. ZY1-02D has high accuracy and consistency in mapping CODMn products in urban water. The results show the potential of ZY1-02D hyperspectral images in mapping non-optically active water quality parameters.

Airborne sensing images harness the combined advantages of hyperspectral and high spatial resolution, offering precise monitoring methods for local-scale water quality parameters in small water bodies. This study employs airborne hyperspectral remote sensing image data to explore remote sensing estimation methods for total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations in Lake Dianshan, Yuandang, as well as its main inflow and outflow rivers. Our findings reveal the following: (1) Spectral bands between 700 and 750 nm show the highest correlation with TN and TP concentrations during the summer and autumn seasons. Spectral reflectance bands exhibit greater sensitivity to TN and TP concentrations compared to the winter and spring seasons. (2) Seasonal models developed using the Catboost method demonstrate significantly higher accuracy than other machine learning (ML) models. On the test set, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) are 0.6 mg/L for TN and 0.05 mg/L for TP concentrations, with average absolute percentage errors (MAPEs) of 23.77% and 25.14%, respectively. (3) Spatial distribution maps of the retrieved TN and TP concentrations indicate their dependence on exogenous inputs and close association with algal blooms. Higher TN and TP concentrations are observed near the inlet (Jishui Port), with reductions near the outlet (Lanlu Port), particularly for the TP concentration. Areas with intense algal blooms near shorelines generally exhibit higher TN and TP concentrations. This study offers valuable insights for processing small water bodies using airborne hyperspectral remote sensing images and provides reliable remote sensing techniques for lake water quality monitoring and management.

The robust detection of infrared small targets plays an important role in infrared early warning systems. However, the high-brightness interference present in the background makes it challenging. To solve this problem, we propose a weighted improved double local contrast measure (WIDLCM) algorithm in this paper. Firstly, we utilize a fixed-scale three-layer window to compute the double neighborhood gray difference to screen candidate target pixels and estimate the target size. Then, according to the size information of each candidate target pixel, an improved double local contrast measure (IDLCM) based on the gray difference is designed to enhance the target and suppress the background. Next, considering the structural characteristics of the target edge, we propose the variance-based weighting coefficient to eliminate clutter further. Finally, the targets are detected by an adaptive threshold. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms several state-of-the-art methods.

Lakes play a crucial role in the earth’s ecosystems and human activities. While turbidity is not a direct biochemical indicator of lake water quality, it is relatively easy to measure and indicates trophic status and lake health. Although ocean color satellites have been widely used to monitor water color parameters, their coarse spatial resolution makes it hard to capture the fine spatial variability of turbidity in lakes. The combination of Sentinel-2 and Landsat provides an opportunity to monitor lake turbidity with high spatial and temporal resolution. This study aims to generate consistent turbidity products in Taihu Lake from 2018 to 2022 using the Multispectral Instrument (MSI) on board Sentinel-2A/B and the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on board Landsat-8/9. We first tested the performance of three atmospheric correction methods to retrieve consistent reflectance from MSI and OLI images. We found that the Rayleigh correction and a subtraction of the SWIR band from Rayleigh-corrected reflectance can generate the most consistent reflectance (the coefficient of determination (R2) > 0.84, the mean absolution percentage error (MAPE) < 7%, the median error (ME) < 0.0035, and slope > 0.92). Machine learning models outperformed an existing semi-analytical retrieval algorithm in retrieving turbidity (MSI: R2 = 0.92, MAPE = 18.78%, and OLI: R2 = 0.93, MAPE = 16.20%). The consistency of turbidity from the same-day MSI and OLI images was also satisfactory (N = 3110 and MAPE = 26.48%). The distribution of turbidity exhibited obvious spatial and seasonal variability in Taihu Lake from 2018 to 2022. The results show the potential of MSI and OLI when combined to monitor inland lake water quality.

Hyperspectral remote sensing is considered an effective tool for monitoring inland water quality. Non-optically active water quality parameters are of great significance to the aquatic environment, although they are rarely used in practical remote sensing applications. This study aims to improve the performance of non-optically active water quality parameter retrieval models by optimizing the wavelength selection and apply to the newly hyperspectral imagery from the Advanced HyperSpectral Imager (AHSI) and Orbita HyperSpectral (OHS) sensors. Focusing on dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen, and total phosphorus (TP), we propose a hyperspectral dimension reduction method based on the variable importance projection (VIP) and segmented principal component analysis (SPCA) method to determine the sensitive bands of different water quality parameters. A total of 81 in-situ samples of water quality parameters and water spectral reflectance were collected in Shanghai between 2018 and 2019. These were analyzed and used to establish quantitative retrieval models. Furthermore, the principal component regression, partial least squares regression, and back-propagation (BP) network models were compared and partly applied to satellite hyperspectral images. The final results show that models based on VIP-SPCA performed better in the validation set, and the best model was COD estimated by BP (VIP-SPCA) with a coefficient of determination (R2) raised from 0.56 to 0.74. The mean absolute percentage error ranged from 14.23% (COD) to 24.11% (TP). Overall, the AHSI and OHS concentration maps had consistent spatial distributions with monthly monitoring data and reasonable concentration levels. Therefore, the results validate the great potential of hyperspectral remote sensing for inland water quality parameter retrieval using VIP-SPCA.
