The accurate estimation of mechanical parameters is essential for the control optimization and condition monitoring of permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. In this article, an online parallel estimation scheme is proposed based on a network of three interconnected extended sliding-mode observers. With a two-step mechanism derived from the developed network, this scheme can simultaneously achieve the accurate real-time observation of three mechanical parameters, including the viscous friction coefficient, the moment of inertia, and the load torque. The first step utilizes the presented network to precisely acquire the Coulomb friction coefficient by offering only one speed. With aiding from this estimated coefficient, the second step attains the high-precision online identification of the three concerned parameters by compensating the Coulomb friction torque to counteract its adverse effect. These two steps are implemented utilizing the identical network, thus, furthest avoiding increasing the estimation complexity. Besides, any additional knowledge other than the rotor speed and electromagnetic torque is no longer required for guaranteeing the asymptotic convergence of the estimation errors. Sufficient evaluations from simulations and experiments confirm the validity of the proposed scheme.

Acquiring the accurate knowledge of nonlinear friction and load torque is of great interest for optimizing the control behavior of permanent-magnet synchronous motor drives. In this work, a friction-and-load adaptive identification scheme based on a parallel-observer-based network with model compensation (POBN-MC) is presented. The developed network possesses a parallel structure consisting of the designed two novel observers, which involve a gain-adaptation super-twisting load torque observer and a variable-learning-rate Adaline inertia observer. A nonempirical friction model is proposed to capture friction, forming the model compensation part that is exploited for correcting the torque input of the network. With a two-step mechanism derived from the POBN-MC, the proposed scheme attains the online adaptive identification of the friction and load torque in a manner that integrates both accuracy and simplicity. In the first step, an explicit mapping relationship between the nonlinear friction torque and the rotor speed is determined with the speed response triggered by the natural deceleration. The second step accomplishes the online observation with regard to friction-and-load information matching the real-time operating conditions. Sufficient theoretical analyses, as well as the validations of numerous simulations and experiments, are presented to support the suggested scheme.

In surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) drives, the distinguished orthogonal-principle-based method is presently popular for handling simultaneous inertia and disturbance torque estimation due to its simplicity and ease of implementation. Nevertheless, it is facing challenges posed by the rotor flux-linkage mismatch, zero-derivative constraint, and operating-condition limitation. To cope with these issues, this article presents an alternative scheme, which explores a stable simultaneous inertia and disturbance torque estimation with the real-time flux-linkage correction. First, an Adaline-based estimator is developed to acquire the disturbance torque. With an input-adaptive learning rate designed by the Lyapunov theory, this estimator can prevent potential convergence failure. Then, an extended sliding-mode observer for inertia estimation is proposed regarding the inertia as a new system state. By using the identified disturbance torque to devise an adaptive feedback gain, this observer guarantees the asymptotic error convergence. Finally, to counteract the flux-linkage mismatch, a flux-linkage observer with a time-varying learning rate is constructed utilizing the Adaline technique. Moreover, it attains robust convergence and only has one to-be-adjusted parameter. The effectiveness of our scheme is validated by abundant simulations and real-time experiments.

The mechanical parameters, including the Coulomb and viscous friction coefficients together with the moment of inertia, are of great interest for the performance optimization and condition evaluation of surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) drives. This article contributes a speed-controller-independent mechanical parameter identification scheme using open-loop speed response due to signal injection, which has not been reported in existing works. It is designed based on the premise that the viscous friction torque is disproportional to the rotor speed, which is a new progress toward estimating the mechanical parameters with high precision. Moreover, as a practical full-participation-type solution, this scheme involves a new electrical parameter estimation technique based on differential algebra to assist in identifying the mechanical parameters. This auxiliary technique attains the current-controller-free estimation of the electrical parameters with the inverter nonlinearity eliminated, thereby addressing the current controller self-commissioning and serving to acquire the accurate electromagnetic torque. The experimental evaluations on two prototype SPMSM drive systems validate the feasibility of this suggested scheme.

Wireless electric vehicle charging (WEVC) is rapidly advancing as an enabling technology for convenient electrified transportation. The trend toward high-power WEVC systems is accelerating, which not only enhances charging speed and user convenience but also introduces new and complex safety challenges. These challenges are particularly acute at the coupler level, where electrical, thermal, and magnetic risks often interact. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of safety management technologies that are specific to WEVC, with an exclusive focus on coupler-related risks. System-level and coupler-level hazards associated with high-power operation are first examined, followed by an in-depth discussion of recent progress in passive safety materials, such as insulation, thermal dissipation, and electromagnetic shielding. Active safety management strategies are also reviewed in detail, including foreign object detection, live body detection, misalignment detection, and multifunctional detection schemes that integrate these capabilities. Emphasis is placed on the ongoing rapid iteration of safety technologies as power levels increase and on the necessity for solutions that are comprehensive, precise, orderly, and reliable. This review concludes by highlighting future research directions, such as data-driven safety management, intelligent sensor integration, regulatory evolution, and user-centered system design, aiming to support the safe and scalable deployment of WEVC in next-generation mobility.

Accurate identification of mechanical parameters holds great significance for optimizing control performance and monitoring working status in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. This work proposes a parameter-tuning-free two-step mechanical parameter identification method using signal injection and algebraic operations. It is devised based on a nonlumped mechanical motion model that incorporates nonlinear and asymmetric friction modeling, which can accurately characterize real-world dynamics. More importantly, the proposed method circumvents the need for parameter adjustments, such as observer gain design and pole placement. With a two-step collaborative mechanism, the developed method is successfully implemented. In the first step, the open-loop speed response triggered by signal injection is exploited to accurately identify nonlinear friction along with the initial inertia value. With aiding from the results of the first step, the second step develops an online algebraic estimator to track the potentially time-varying load torque and inertia. Real-time experiments are conducted on a 1.2-kW practical PMSM drive system to validate the feasibility of the presented method.
