Although neurophysiological and psychophysical proof of osseoperception is accumulating, histomorphometric evidence for the neural mechanisms of functional compensation following immediate and delayed implant loading is still lacking. For this randomized split-mouth study, six mongrel dogs randomly received one of four treatment protocols at 36 implant-recipient sites over 16 weeks (third maxillary incisor, third and fourth mandibular premolar): immediate implant placement and immediate loading (IIP+IL); delayed implant placement and delayed loading (DIP+DL); delayed implant placement and immediate loading (DIP+IL); and natural extraction socket healing (control). Histomorphometry was performed in the peri-implant bone and soft tissues within 300 µm around the implants. Immunocytochemistry and transmission electron microscopy were used to confirm the presence of neural structures and to reveal their ultrastructural characteristics, respectively. Myelinated nerve fibres densely populated the peri-implant crestal gingival and apical regions, although they were also identified in the woven bone and in the osteons near the implant threads. Compared with the control group in the mandible, the group that received IIP+IL showed a higher innervation (in N ⋅ mm−2, 5.94±1.12 vs. 3.15±0.63, P<0.001) and smaller fibre diameter (in µm, 1.37±0.05 vs. 1.64±0.13, P=0.016), smaller axon diameter (in µm, 0.89±0.05 vs. 1.24±0.10, P=0.009) and g-ratio (0.64±0.04 vs. 0.76±0.05, P<0.001) in the middle region around the implants. Compared with DIP+IL in the mandible, IIP+IL had a higher nerve density (in N ⋅ mm−2, 13.23±2.54 vs. 9.64±1.86, P=0.027), greater fibre diameter (in µm, 1.32±0.02 vs. 1.20±0.04, P=0.021), greater axon diameter (in µm, 0.92±0.01 vs. 0.89±0.03, P=0.035) and lower g-ratio (0.69±0.01 vs. 0.74±0.01, P=0.033) in the apical region around the implants. It may be assumed that the treatment protocol with IIP+IL is the preferred method to allow optimized peri-implant re-innervation, but further functional measurements are still required.

A mini time-sliced ion velocity map imaging photofragment translational spectrometer using low voltage acceleration has been constructed. The innovation of this apparatus adopts a relative low voltage (30–150 V) to substitute the traditional high voltage (650–4000 V) to accelerate and focus the fragment ions. The overall length of the flight path is merely 12 cm. There are many advantages for this instrument, such as compact structure, less interference, and easy to operate and control. Low voltage acceleration gives a longer turn-around time to the photofragment ions forming a thicker Newton sphere, which provides sufficient time for slicing. Ion trajectory simulation has been performed for determining the structure dimensions and the operating voltages. The photodissociation and multiphoton ionization of O2 at 224.999 nm is used to calibrate the ion images and examine the overall performance of the new spectrometer. The velocity resolution (Δν/ν) of this spectrometer from O2 photodissociation is about 0.8%, which is better than most previous results using high acceleration voltage. For the case of CF3I dissociation at 277.38 nm, many CF3 vibrational states have been resolved, and the anisotropy parameter has been measured. The application of low voltage acceleration has shown its advantages on the ion velocity map imaging (VMI) apparatus. The miniaturization of the VMI instruments can be realized on the premise of high resolution.

Purpose: This study was based on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database and aimed to analyze the trend of disease burden for complete edentulism in Chinese adults between 1990 and 2030, and to provide valuable information for the development of more effective management and preventive measures. Methods: Data on Chinese adults with complete edentulism from 1990 to 2019 was analyzed using GHDx data. Descriptive analyses were used to analyze changes in the prevalence and burden of complete edentulism, gender and age distribution between 1990 and 2019. In addition, we used an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to predict the trend of disease burden for Chinese adults with complete edentulism between 2020 and 2030.Results: The incidence, prevalence, and rate of YLDs in adults with complete edentulism in China showed an increasing trend from 1990 to 2019. In 2019, the incidence was 251.20 per 100,000, the prevalence was 4512.78 per 100,000, and the YLDs were 123.44 per 100,000, marking increases of 20.58, 94.18, and 93.12% from 1990. Males experienced a higher increase than females. However, the standardized rates decreased over the same period. The ARIMA model predicts a subsequent upward and then downward trend for all indicators between 2019 and 2030, except for the standardized incidence rate which remained essentially unchanged. Specifically, the incidence is predicted to decrease from 388.93 to 314.40 per 100,000, prevalence from 4512.78 to 3049.70 per 100,000, and YLDs from 123.44 to 103.44 per 100,000. The standardized prevalence and YLDs rates are also expected to decrease. Conclusion: The burden of complete edentulism in China is projected to show an increasing trend from 2020 to 2022 and a decreasing trend from 2023 to 2030. Despite the decline in the burden of disease associated with complete edentulism in China, many problems remain to be solved.

Dairy cows commonly experience health disorders in the early-lactation period. Although Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy offers a noninvasive and cost-effective method for analyzing milk composition, its potential in predicting subsequent early-lactation diseases has yet to be adequately explored. This study aimed to uncover the ability of milk FTIR spectra to predict postpartum diseases in 1,162 Holstein cows from a commercial dairy farm in Cayuga County, NY. We collected proportional milk samples daily on cows in the early-lactation pen and stored milk at 4°C until analysis via FTIR spectroscopy. Cows were monitored through 30 DIM and classified as healthy (n = 825; no adverse health events) or diseased (n = 311; diagnosis of clinical ketosis, metritis, displaced abomasum, or mastitis, or any combination of these). We developed predictive models for 8 distinct time periods preceding the diagnosis date (>10 d, 10-8 d, 7-6 d, 5-4 d, 3 d, 2 d, 1 d, and 0 d), using regression, machine learning, and deep-learning methods applied to milk FTIR spectral data. Model performance was evaluated through a repeated down-sampled double cross-validation framework and permutation tests. Our results showed that progressive changes in spectral regions related to the absorbance peaks of fat, protein, and lactose are correlated with disease progression, leading to an increase in average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) from 0.50 (>10 d before diagnosis) to 0.72 (1 d prior) and 0.76 (the day of diagnosis) across all model types. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) models using milk FTIR spectra achieved an average AUROC of 0.71 from 7 d before diagnosis, outperforming models based on cow-level features (0.62) or combined with spectra-predicted milk major components (0.67). Among spectral models, PLS-DA reached the highest average AUROC (0.74), followed by long short-term memory (0.72), and surpassed ridge regression (0.71) and random forest (0.69). These findings highlight the effectiveness of using milk FTIR spectra to predict upcoming health conditions in early-lactation Holstein dairy cows, although broader evaluation is necessary to assess generalizability and on-farm utility.

Background/Objectives: Lip and oral cavity cancer (LOC) remains a critical public health challenge in Asia. This study evaluated spatiotemporal trends and risk factor contributions to LOC-related disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from 1990 to 2021 to inform evidence-based healthcare policies. Methods: Using Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 data, we analyzed LOC DALYs stratified by age, gender, risk factors (smoking, alcohol use, tobacco chewing), and subregions in Asia. Temporal trends were quantified via estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) across five geographic regions and sociodemographic index (SDI) categories. Age–period–cohort (APC) modeling was used to assess age-specific risk distributions. Results: From 1990 to 2021, Asia’s age-standardized DALY rate (ASDR) for LOC marginally increased (EAPC: 0.0883, 95% CI: 0.0802–0.0963). The alcohol-related ASDR increased sharply (EAPC: 1.033, 95% CI: 1.00–1.06), whereas decreases were detected in the smoking- and tobacco chewing-attributable ASDRs. Pronounced upward trends were observed in South Asia and low/low-middle-SDI regions. Tobacco chewing was the primary risk factor for women and for the populations in South Asia and lower-SDI regions, whereas smoking dominated among men and those in other geographic regions and in higher-SDI areas. APC analysis revealed age-driven increases in ASDR, with alcohol use and tobacco chewing risk increased with age. Notably, the steepest ASDR increase occurred in individuals aged 20–25 years. Conclusions: The LOC burden in Asia reflects divergent risk factor dynamics. Policy strategies must prioritize geographic and demographic targeting: alcohol control in rapidly developing areas and intensified tobacco cessation programs in endemic zones. Early prevention efforts focusing on adolescents and tailored to subregional risk profiles are essential to mitigate future disease burden.
