Dr Yasir Arafat is a Chemical Engineer with expertise in catalysis, battery materials, and resource recovery. His research spans the full battery value chain, from upstream critical material recovery and processing to midstream development of next-generation lithium-ion and metal–air batteries, and downstream recycling, safety, and second-life repurposing. He is a Senior Research Engineer at Edith Cowan University (ECU), Australia, contributing to the iMOVE CRC project “Addressing Electric Vehicle Battery Repurposing Challenges.” Dr Arafat possesses substantial hands-on experience in fabricating functional battery materials, including metal–air and all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries, as well as cathodes, solid electrolytes, and electrode composites. His current research focuses on diagnostics of retired EV batteries, thermal and safety analytics, and data-driven prognostic techniques, integrating machine-learning models for precise State-of-Health (SOH) estimation and predictive maintenance of aging EV batteries. He earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Curtin University, where he developed metal–organic-framework-integrated high-performance batteries. His broader expertise includes battery degradation analysis, hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical resource recovery, and the advancement of safe, sustainable, and circular energy-storage technologies.
