Biography

Dr Ewa Markiewicz is the Head of Research in Skin Systems Biology at Hexis Lab, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. She holds PhD in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Biotechnology, University of Wroclaw, where she gained experience in molecular cell biology and phytochemicals. She gained further experience at the Max Planck Institute in Berlin and Jacques Monod Institute in Paris through the CNRS fellowship. During her post-doctoral work at Dundee and Durham Universities, she focused on human cell biology studying the mechanisms of degenerative and premature ageing disorders linked to the genetics of the nuclear envelope. As the recipient of the Medical Research Council Career Development Award in Stem Cell Research at Durham University, she subsequently worked as Principal Investigator and established a research programme into stress-induced premature ageing and regenerative repair with a focus on skin and its appendages including hair and subcutaneous adipose tissue. As an academic member or visiting scientist, she was also involved in several national and international organisations bringing together basic, clinical, government and company-based research. At Hexis Lab, Dr Markiewicz works across the molecular cell and systems biology, bioengineering, polypharmacology networks and next-generation topical interventions, promoting sustained relationships with industry and academia for biomedical applications related to personalised skin health, innovation and peer-reviewed publishing.
