Biography

Dr. Hsing-Yu Chen is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) doctor and internal specialist in the Department of TCM, Division of Chinese Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH); he is also an associate professor of TCM at Chang-Gung University. He is interested in analyzing the utilization patterns and effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) using the National Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) and the multi-institutional Chang Gung Research Database (CGRD) in Taiwan. The studied subjects include the (1) potential effectiveness of TCM treatment among cancers, chronic kidney disease, and obesity, (2) the characteristics of TCM users, and (3) the discovery of Chinese herbal medicine networks (CMNs) and core herbal treatments with exploration on possible biomedical pathways in silico, in vitro, and in vivo. Recently, he has been studying the effectiveness of herbal medicine for treating chronic kidney disease, cancer, and obesity by analyzing hospital-based and nationwide data, supported by grants from Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital. In addition, both in vitro and in vivo studies are being designed to explore the possible mechanisms of herbs. Herbal medicine is an ancient treatment art with high prevalence in Taiwan (over 60% of general population). He believes that the use of herb medicine can become more safe, effective and understandable through these studies.
