Biography

Inmaculada Varó Vaello is a Tenured Researcher at the Instituto de Acuicultura Torre de la Sal (IATS-CSIC, Spain), where she leads the ecotoxicology line within the “Live Preys in Aquaculture, Larviculture and Ecotoxicology” group. She obtained her PhD (Extraordinary Doctorate Award) from the University of Valencia (1993) and holds a degree in Marine Biology from the University of La Laguna (Spain). Her research focuses on aquatic ecotoxicology, biomarker development, and multi-omics approaches to assess the health, nutrition, and welfare of aquatic organisms under environmental stress, including pollution and climate change. She has made pioneering contributions to cephalopod aquaculture, particularly in Octopus vulgaris, using proteomics and transcriptomics to identify biomarkers related to metabolism, stress, and immune responses. She has also advanced the use of Artemia as a model organism for toxicity testing and the study of trophic transfer of contaminants in marine environments. Dr. Varó has participated in over 40 research projects and international collaborations. She teaches in the Master’s Degree in Aquaculture (University of Valencia–Polytechnic University of Valencia–IATS) and contributes to postgraduate programs in environmental toxicology. Since 2015, she has supervised numerous PhD, Master’s, and undergraduate theses and is actively involved in peer review, evaluation, and scientific dissemination.
