Biography

I am a physician specialized in Infectious Diseases, with a strong clinical and academic focus on the care of people living with HIV, immunocompromised patients, and individuals with complex infectious conditions. A central area of my professional interest is medical mycology, particularly the diagnosis, management, and prevention of invasive fungal infections, which represent a significant yet often underrecognized cause of morbidity and mortality in vulnerable populations. I currently serve as Chair of the Mycology Committee of the Pan American Association of Infectious Diseases (API) and as Vice President of the Colombian Association of Infectious Diseases (ACIN). Through these leadership roles, I actively promote regional collaboration, scientific exchange, and educational initiatives aimed at strengthening infectious diseases practice across Latin America. My work is driven by a commitment to increasing the visibility and early recognition of invasive fungal infections, improving access to updated diagnostic tools, and fostering the rational and evidence-based use of antifungal therapies. I am particularly interested in adapting global recommendations to the epidemiological, economic, and healthcare realities of Latin American countries. In parallel with my clinical practice, I maintain a strong interest in clinical and translational research, focusing on fungal epidemiology, outcomes in immunosuppressed hosts, antifungal stewardship, and cost-effectiveness analyses.
