Prof. Cobo received his Bachelor's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Granada and Jaén (UJA) in Spain, and has been at the UJA since 1995, becoming a full Professor in 2013. He is a member of the Bioactive Heterocyclic Compounds in UJA, and has been the head of the Inorganic and Organic Department and manager of scientific facilities; he is currently leading the Chemistry Doctoral Program. He is a member of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry. He is committed to the search for new chemical entities (NCEs), with a special interest in the search for bioactive compounds bearing a core of pyrimidine, pyrrole, pyrazole, imidazole, pyridine or quinolone, with broad anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, and enzymatic inhibitor applications; these also have potential for treating neurodegenerative diseases and can be used in structural elucidation employing x-ray diffraction. He is credited with over 400 published papers.
