Purpose: – The purpose of this paper is to articulate clear understanding about the role of enterprise information systems (EIS) in developing innovative business practices. Particularly, it aims to explore the different ways that make EIS enables innovation development. Design/methodology/approach: – The study adopted exploratory case study, based on qualitative approach. Investigations included two case studies each involved interviewing a number of senior information technology staff, working at these cases. Findings: – The paper provides empirical insights about the EIS role in enabling innovation. The analysis of the case studies revealed that integrating an EIS with other system(s) or with digital devices can provide new practices that could not be easily available without these technologies. The study also found that applying data analytics tools into data accumulated from EIS, to extract new insights, lead to innovative practices. Practical implications: – The study provides a set of recommendations for organizations interested to maximize the benefits from their investments in EIS. Originality/value: – The paper provides evidences from cases in United Arab Emirates for the EIS role in enabling business innovation.

Purpose: Generally, the use of cloud-based services has proliferated all around the world. This tendency increased dramatically during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic when many people were obliged to conduct business remotely. This research study aims to investigate the intentions to adopt (IA) cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems in Jordan, as this sort of research is scarce in developing countries. Specifically, this research study combined the model of Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) and the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, in addition to looking at COVID-19 as a moderating variable.Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected from 60 participants working in Jordanian companies that currently use, or have the intention to use, cloud-based ERP systems. An online questionnaire was developed and used to collect responses. The study hypotheses were examined statistically using simple regression analysis and hierarchical multiple regression.Findings: The study results clearly indicate that complexity, observability, employee information technology (IT) skills, organizational culture (OC) and top management support significantly affect the intention to adopt cloud-based ERP systems. In contrast, relative advantage (RA), compatibility, trialability, regulatory environment and competitive pressure had no significant effect on adoption intention. Interestingly, the advent of COVID-19 increased the intention to adopt cloud-based ERP systems.Research limitations/implications: The study's findings will provide theoretical and practical suggestions for the effective adoption of cloud ERP in Jordan, as well as aiding other developing nations in comparable situations in implementing cloud-based ERP systems.Originality/value: The study enriches the knowledge and further examines the underlying reasons for adopting cloud-based ERP systems in a developing country.

This paper investigates enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementations to improve the ability to realize outstanding value from such systems. In particular, it aims to provide a deep understanding of realizing sustainable value from ERP systems and to examine the relevance of benefits management (BM) in this context. To do so, this research applied a qualitative case study approach to investigate the implementation of Tier-1 ERP systems in two firms. Key findings initially suggest five considerations to better understand the realization of benefits from ERP implementation. Consequently, this research outlines the key activities undertaken by the investigated organizations and aligns them with activities suggested by benefits management literature. In conclusion, this research conjectures that while benefits management is a good practice and a systematic approach to realizing benefits from information systems, it may be ineffective in addressing the benefits that emerge in practice, i.e., when integrating the ERP system with modern digital technologies. Therefore, this research advocates either revisiting the current BM techniques or improving the implementation of digital technologies, including ERP systems with BM concepts and principles by incorporating such BM concepts within the implementation process. This study responds to research calls for maximizing the returned value from the implemented ERP systems by providing insightful recommendations.

Despite the worthwhile studies that have been conducted on the realization of benefits from Enterprise Information Systems (EISs), many organizations are not satisfied with the benefits they have gained. This work draws on the sociomaterial perspective and suggests that benefits can be realized when organizations are able to utilize their capabilities in order to exploit the technological possibilities of the EISs, in addition to their willingness to change their business routines. It suggests focusing on the unintended benefits that can emerge based on the organizational capabilities and the system possibilities. The main contribution from this conceptual work is to provide a discussion about how sociomateriality can enrich the understanding of benefits realization from enterprise systems
