Luis H. Alvarez is a Professor in the Biotechnology and Food Science Department at Instituto Tecnológico de Sonora (ITSON), where he coordinates the Ph.D. Program in Biotechnology Sciences and leads the Academic Research Group on Biotechnologies for Waste Treatment and Valorization. He earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from the Instituto Potosino de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica (IPICYT). His research focuses on anaerobic digestion, direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), microbial electrochemical systems, and the application of micro- and nanoscale functionalized carbon materials to optimize microbial metabolism for bioenergy and biochemical recovery (such as biohydrogen and volatile fatty acids).
