Background: Chronic stress responses can lead to physical and behavioural health problems, often experienced and observed in the care of people with intellectual disabilities or people with dementia. Electrodermal activity (EDA) is a bio-signal for stress, which can be measured by wearables and thereby support stress management. However, the how, when and to what extent patients and healthcare providers can benefit is unclear. This study aims to create an overview of available wearables enabling the detection of perceived stress by using EDA. Methods: Following the PRISMA-SCR protocol for scoping reviews, four databases were included in the search of peer-reviewed studies published between 2012 and 2022, reporting detection of EDA in relation to self-reported stress or stress-related behaviours. Type of wearable, bodily location, research population, context, stressor type and the reported relationship between EDA and perceived stress were extracted. Results: Of the 74 included studies, the majority included healthy subjects in laboratory situations. Field studies and studies using machine learning (ML) to predict stress have increased in the last years. EDA is most often measured on the wrist, with offline data processing. Studies predicting perceived stress or stress-related behaviour using EDA features, reported accuracies between 42% and 100% with an average of 82.6%. Of these studies, the majority used ML. Conclusion: Wearable EDA sensors are promising in detecting perceived stress. Field studies with relevant populations in a health or care context are lacking. Future studies should focus on the application of EDA-measuring wearables in real-life situations to support stress management.

Buprenorphine is commonly used as (part of) postoperative analgesic treatment with dosage dependent side-effects such as pica behaviour. No strict consensus exists about the optimal dosing interval of buprenorphine, as its duration of action has been described as being in the range of 6–12 h. In this study, dosing intervals of 8 h (thrice-a-day) and 12 h (twice-a-day) for buprenorphine in a multimodal analgesic strategy (concurrent administration of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) were compared on food intake, weight and side-effects (gnawing on plastic Petri dishes and growth rate, indicative of pica behaviour) in rats. The food intake and weight of both intervals were comparable, as the animals from the twice-a-day group did not lose more weight or consumed less food during the analgesic period. The rats from the thrice-a-day group suffered from more side-effects, as the growth rate was decreased and more plastic was gnawed on. It is recommended to carefully evaluate analgesic and side-effects when using buprenorphine. When side-effects are observed, the possibility of increasing the dosing interval of buprenorphine should be explored. In this study, increasing the dosing interval of buprenorphine in a multimodal analgesic regimen resulted in reduced unwanted side-effects, without increasing weight loss or decreasing food intake. Although this is suggestive of provision of comparable analgesia, future studies including more pain-related readout parameters to assess the effect of the dosing interval on analgesic efficacy are recommended.

Functional disability in people with dementia is associated with placement in long-term care facilities, feelings of depression and caregiver burden. As there is currently no cure for dementia, more attention is needed for personalised support for people living with dementia at home. A promising non-pharmacological innovation for reducing problems in functional activities is biodynamic lighting. This type of artificial lighting resembles a normal daylight curve, including changes in light intensity and colour during the day. The aim of this pilot study with three participants is to explore the possible influence of biodynamic lighting on functional activities over time on people with dementia living at home. The study used an A-B-A-B withdrawal single-case experimental design. In the intervention phases, the participants were exposed to biodynamic lighting, while in the placebo phases, the participants were exposed to placebo light. Both light phases came from the same light system. Based on this study protocol, the quantitative effects of biodynamic light related with functional activity did not reach significance. However, the qualitative results of lighting seem promising with a stabilisation of functional activity experienced over time. Future research should examine the effects that light may have on functional activity more in-depth. This study offers recommendations for longitudinal research.
