Michael Hsiao was born in Taiwan. He graduated with a DVM from National Taiwan University in June 1983, majoring in Veterinary Medicine. He studied Medical Pathology in the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA (1986–1991, PhD in 1981). He did Post-doctoral Fellowship works at the Department of Biology, Moores Cancer Center, UCSD, La Jolla, CA, USA (1991-1994). He became Senior Research Associate at the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Neurobiology, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA, USA (1995-1998). He set up his independent Molecular Medicine Research Laboratory at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Kaohsiung, Taiwan (1998-2005). He moved to Genomics Research Center, Academia Sinica, Taiwan and set up Cancer Research Laboratory, Genome Biology Laboratory, Molecular and Digital Pathology Core Facility, Animal Core Facility, Molecular Imaging Core Facility and in charge of these Laboratories and Facilities (from 2005 to present). He is current a Professor and Research Fellow at the Genomics Research Center of Academia Sinica. He has Joint Professor appointment at Kaohsiung Medical University, National Taiwan University, Taipei Medical University, China Medical University, and National Defense Medical College. He currently serves as an Executive Editor of BBA-Molecular Basis of Disease. He also serves as an Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports, and American Journal of Cancer Research. He has co-founded BBA-Advances in year 2020.
