The synthesis and characterization of new deuterated liquid crystal (LC) compounds based on phenyl tolane core is described in this paper. The work presents an alternative molecular approach to the conventional LC design. Correlations between molecular structure and mesomorphic and optical properties for compounds which are alkyl-hydrogen terminated and alkyl-deuterium, have been drawn. The compounds are characterized by mass spectrometry (electron ionization) analysis and infrared spectroscopy. They show enantiotropic nematic behavior in a broad temperature range, confirmed by a polarizing thermomicroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Detailed synthetic procedures are attached. Synthesized compounds show a significantly reduced absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) and medium-wavelength infrared (MWIR) radiation range, and stand as promising components of medium to highly birefringent liquid crystalline mixtures.

This work reports the synthesis method and various properties of four rod-like antiferroelectric (R) laterally substituted enantiomers, with or without fluorine atoms used as substituents in the benzene ring. The influence of fluorine substitution on the mesophase temperature range was determined. The synthesized compounds are three-ring rod-like smectics with a chiral center based on (R)-(−)-2-octanol. Their chemical and optical purity was checked using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Two newly synthesized enantiomers and three previously reported (R) enantiomers were used to formulate two antiferroelectric mixtures. The mesomorphic behavior was characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The helical pitch and tilt angle measurements were done using the selective light reflection phenomenon and the electro-optical method, respectively. All the enantiomers exhibit a wide temperature range of the antiferroelectric phase, with a high tilt angle. Furthermore, the enantiomer with lateral fluorine substitution in the ortho position has a very long helical pitch (more than 2.0 µm), relatively low enthalpy of melting point, and a tilt angle close to 45 degrees. The designed (R) enantiomers can be useful for formulating eutectic mixtures for further use in various devices, including photonics and optoelectronics.

We have designed new chiral smectic mesogens with the -CH2O group near the chiral center. We synthesized two unique rod-like compounds. We determined the mesomorphic properties of these mesogens and confirmed the phase identification using dielectric spectroscopy. Depending on the length of the oligomethylene spacer (i.e., the number of methylene groups) in the achiral part of the molecules, the studied materials show different phase sequences. Moreover, the temperature ranges of the observed smectic phases are different. It can be seen that as the length of the alkyl chain increases, the liquid crystalline material shows more mesophases. Additionally, its clearing (isotropization) temperature increases. The studied compounds are compared with the structurally similar smectogens previously synthesized. The helical pitch measurements were performed using the selective reflection method. These materials can be useful and effective as chiral components and dopants in smectic mixtures targeted for optoelectronics and photonics.

The synthesis and phase behavior of two liquid crystalline racemates containing four aromatic rings, differing in the number of methylene groups, were reported. These materials form smectic phases, as was confirmed by dielectric spectroscopy. The mesomorphic properties of the studied racemates were compared with those of the appropriate (S) enantiomers previously synthesized. Since these materials are racemic mixtures, they were subjected to chiral separation by high-performance liquid chromatography. This research was conducted on two chiral columns based on polysaccharides. We identified optimal conditions that enable the baseline separation of these racemates, which can be scaled up for preparative purposes. Then, there is no need for repeated synthesis of chiral equivalents.

Four liquid crystalline racemates, with oligomethylene spacer lengths of three and five and terminal alkyl chain carbon numbers of six and seven (acronyms 3PhPhC6, 5PhPhC6, 3PhPhC7, and 5PhPhC7), were synthesized. Racemates were characterized by their mesomorphic and thermodynamic properties. Identification of the liquid crystalline phases was performed using polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and the temperatures and enthalpies of phase transitions were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Two selected racemates were used as dopants in antiferroelectric mixtures with investigated properties, and the effects of their addition on the mesomorphic properties of these mixtures were examined. The helical pitch of the doped mixtures was also measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Racemates containing six carbon atoms in the alkyl chain (C6) exhibit the following phase sequence of Cr-SmCA-SmC-SmA-Iso, while racemates with seven carbon atoms (C7) exhibit the following phase sequence of Cr-SmC-SmA-Iso. Racemate-doped mixtures exhibit a very wide range of the antiferroelectric phase and slightly higher clearing points than the base mixtures. The helical pitch of the racemate-doped mixtures is longer than that of the base mixtures. Racemates containing seven carbon atoms in the alkyl chain have the potential to be used in the ferroelectric mixtures due to the absence of an anticlinic phase.
