With ever-advancing computer technology, the Monte Carlo (MC) neutron transport calculation is expanding its application area to nuclear reactor transient analysis. Dynamic MC (DMC) neutron tracking for transient analysis requires efficient algorithms for delayed neutron generation, neutron population control, and initial condition modeling. In this paper, a new MC steady-state simulation method based on time-dependent MC neutron tracking is proposed for steady-state initial condition modeling; during this process, prompt neutron sources and delayed neutron precursors for the DMC transient simulation can easily be sampled. The DMC method, including the proposed time-dependent DMC steady-state simulation method, has been implemented in McCARD and applied for two-dimensional core kinetics problems in the time-dependent neutron transport benchmark C5G7-TD. The McCARD DMC calculation results show good agreement with results of a deterministic transport analysis code, nTRACER

Purpose: This study aims to present a unique hybrid metaheuristic approach to solving the nonlinear analysis of hall currents and electric double layer (EDL) effects in multiphase wavy flow by merging the firefly algorithm (FA) and the water cycle algorithm (WCA).Design/methodology/approach: Nonlinear Hall currents and EDL effects in multiphase wavy flow are originally described by partial differential equations, which are then translated into an ordinary differential equation model. The hybrid FA-WCA technique is used to take on the optimization challenge and find the best possible design weights for artificial neural networks. The fitness function is efficiently optimized by this hybrid approach, allowing the optimal design weights to be determined.Findings: The proposed strategy is shown to be effective by taking into account multiple variables to arrive at a single answer. The numerical results obtained from the proposed method exhibit good agreement with the reference solution within finite intervals, showcasing the accuracy of the approach used in this study. Furthermore, a comparison is made between the presented results and the reference numerical solutions of the Hall Currents and electroosmotic effects in multiphase wavy flow problem.Originality/value: This comparative analysis includes various performance indices, providing a statistical assessment of the precision, efficiency and reliability of the proposed approach. Moreover, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is a new work which has not been explored in existing literature and will add new directions to the field of fluid flows to predict most accurate results.

In order to maximize both the life cycle and efficiency of a reactor core, it is essential to find the optimum loading pattern. In the case of research reactors, a loading pattern can also be optimized for flux at an irradiation site. Therefore, the development of a general-use methodology for core loading optimization would be very valuable. In this paper, general-use multiobjective core reloading pattern optimization is performed using modified genetic algorithms (MGA). The developed strategy can be applied for the constrained optimization of research and power reactor cores. For an optimal reactor core reloading design strategy, an intelligent technique GA is coupled with the Monte Carlo (MC) code SuperMC developed by the FDS team in China for nuclear reactor physics calculations. An optimal loading pattern can be depicted as a configuration that has the maximum keff and maximum thermal fluxes in the core of the given fuel inventory keeping in view the safety constraints such as limitation on power peaking factor. The optimized loading patterns for Pakistan Research Reactor-1 (PARR-1) have been recommended using the implemented strategy by considering the constraint optimization, i.e., to maximize the keff or maximum thermal neutron flux while maintaining low power peaking factor. It has been observed that the developed intelligent strategy performs these tasks with a reasonable computational cost.
