Prof. Magan is Head of the Applied Mycology Group, Environment and AgriFood Theme of Cranfield University. He completed his BSc (Hons) Botany and MSc (Plant Pathology) at Exeter University, U.K, and his PhD at Rothamsted Research (external student Reading University) in 1982. He was awarded his DSc in 2013 for his work on the ecophysiology of spoilage and mycotoxigenic fungi in food chains. He holds the Chair in Applied Mycology at Cranfield University. He has carried out research on food security/safety and spoilage/mycotoxigenic fungi for 35 years. His current research includes: (1) climate change impact on fungal pathogens, especially toxigenic fungi pre- and post-harvest, and their control using different biocides; (2) ecology and control of mycotoxins in staple food/feed chains and minimization strategies; (3) biocontrol of plant pathogens/pests and mycotoxigenic fungi in both durables and perishables; (4) novel preservation systems for controlling spoilage molds in processed foods, especially intermediate moisture bakery products; (5) development of DSS systems for real time management of food chains pre- and post-harvest; and (6) potential for using biodegradable packaging systems with novel preservatives for the control of spoilage molds in food products. He has published widely in these research areas, with 300+ peer-reviewed journal papers. He has an H-index of 62 (Scopus) and 82 (Google scholar).
