Offshore oil and gas resources play a crucial role in supplementing the energy needs of human society. The crisscrossing subsea pipeline network, which serves as vital infrastructure for the storage and transportation of offshore oil and gas, requires regular inspection and maintenance to ensure safe operation and prevent ecological pollution. In-line inspection (ILI) techniques have been widely used in the detection and inspection of potential hazards within the pipeline network. This paper offers an overview of ILI techniques used in subsea pipelines, examining their advantages, limitations, applicable scenarios, and performance. It aims to provide valuable insights for the selection of ILI technologies in engineering and may be beneficial for those involved in pipeline integrity management and planning.

The viscometric behavior of laponite and bentonite suspensions at different concentrations in shear flow is studied. It is discovered that in the equilibrium state, a master curve of viscosity can be constructed when the applied shear stress is normalized by the respective suspension’s yield stress. The interparticle interaction controlling the yield behavior at the gel state also dominates the behavior of particles at the equilibrium flowing state. A constitutive framework is developed to describe the master curve of viscosity as a function of the shear stress normalized by the yield stress. Based on the proposed model, the effect of concentration on the viscosity of clay suspensions can be estimated via their yield stress.

The in situ monitoring of displacement variation is important for studying the seabed subsidence mechanism. To meet the multi-point measurement requirements for vertical displacement in subsidence monitoring of the seabed surface, a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems accelerometer array was designed. By sensing the tilt angles, displacements on the array can be calculated. The subsidence is calculated as the difference in the displacements from the initial values. To improve the accuracy of the displacement calculation, a calibration model of the tilt angle was presented. The model parameters are computed through a least squares estimation method, which is solved by the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Experimental results show that the calibration model performs excellently with the maximum error of tilt angle being less than 1° in the measurement range (−90°, 90°). The displacement measurement accuracy of the array (2.1 m long) is almost less than 1 cm. Thus, the results show a strong agreement between the detected data and actual deformation in the test.
