Rafael Cervantes Duarte has a PhD in Marine Ecology from CICESE-Mexico. In his academic training, he has addressed research topics related to phytoplankton ecology and factors that control primary production in semi-arid subtropical coastal systems. He has recently addressed issues of water quality and marine pollution in coastal lagoons. He has participated in the publication of scientific articles as author and co-author on various topics of marine ecology and oceanography. He has also supervised and reviewed undergraduate and graduate theses, participated in refereeing in national and international journals. He participated in postgraduate courses in chemical oceanography, marine environmental impact, and ecophysiology of macroalgae, on the topics of light, photosynthesis, and nutrients. From 2021 to date, he has been a technical manager of SIP-IPN Multidisciplinary Projects (2020-2022 and 2023-2025) focused on the influence of global and anthropogenic change on coastal systems (La Paz Bay and Magdalena Bay, Mexico) and in the 2021-2024 period in the Frontier Science project (CF-2019-6364) investigating the effect of the increase in temperature and acidification of the sea and its effect on the ecology of the pelagic system, using sedimentation traps in Cuenca Alfonso, Bahia de La Paz, Mexico.
