We propose an active learning scheme for automatically sampling a minimum number of uncorrelated configurations for fitting the Gaussian Approximation Potential (GAP). Our active learning scheme consists of an unsupervised machine learning (ML) scheme coupled with a Bayesian optimization technique that evaluates the GAP model. We apply this scheme to a Hafnium dioxide (HfO2) dataset generated from a “melt-quench” ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) protocol. Our results show that the active learning scheme, with no prior knowledge of the dataset, is able to extract a configuration that reaches the required energy fit tolerance. Further, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations performed using this active learned GAP model on 6144 atom systems of amorphous and liquid state elucidate the structural properties of HfO2 with near ab initio precision and quench rates (i.e., 1.0 K/ps) not accessible via AIMD. The melt and amorphous X-ray structural factors generated from our simulation are in good agreement with experiment. In addition, the calculated diffusion constants are in good agreement with previous ab initio studies.

We consider the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian with constant magnetic field on domains of finite measure. First, in the case of a disk, we prove that the eigenvalue branches with respect to the field strength behave asymptotically linear with an exponentially small remainder term as the field strength goes to infinity. We compute the asymptotic expression for this remainder term. Second, we show that for sufficiently large magnetic field strengths, the spectral bound corresponding to the Pólya conjecture for the non-magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian is violated up to a sharp excess factor which is independent of the domain.

We compute asymptotic expansions for the negative eigenvalues of the Pauli operator in two dimensions perturbed by a weakly coupled potential with definite sign. Whereas previous results were limited to the case of radial magnetic fields and potentials, we are able to drop the assumption of radial symmetry entirely.

We present numerical minimizers for the first seven eigenvalues of the planar magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian with constant magnetic field in a wide range of field strengths. Adapting an approach by Antunes and Freitas, we use gradient descent for the minimization procedure together with the Method of Fundamental solutions for eigenvalue computation. Remarkably, we observe that when the magnetic flux exceeds the index of the target eigenvalue, the minimizer is always a disk.

We prove a Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum type inequality for the number of negative eigenvalues of Pauli operators in dimension two. The resulting upper bound is sharp both in the weak as well as in the strong coupling limit. We also derive different upper bounds for magnetic Schrödinger operators. The nature of the two estimates depends on whether or not the spin-orbit coupling is taken into account.
