Deep networks have shown impressive performance in the image restoration tasks, such as image colorization. However, we find that previous approaches rely on the digital representation from single color model with a specific mapping function, a.k.a., color space, during the colorization pipeline. In this paper, we first investigate the modeling of different color spaces, and find each of them exhibiting distinctive characteristics with unique distribution of colors. The complementarity among multiple color spaces leads to benefits for the image colorization task. We present MultiColor, a new learning-based approach to automatically colorize grayscale images that combines clues from multiple color spaces. Specifically, we employ a set of dedicated colorization modules for individual color space. Within each module, a transformer decoder is first employed to refine color query embeddings and then a color mapper produces color channel prediction using the embeddings and semantic features. With these predicted color channels representing various color spaces, a complementary network is designed to exploit the complementarity and generate pleasing and reasonable colorized images. We conduct extensive experiments on real-world datasets, and the results demonstrate superior performance over the state-of-the-arts.

Reading scene text in the natural image is of fundamental importance in many real-world problems. Text recognition has a profound effect on information processing by enabling automated extraction and interpretation. Recent scene text recognition methods employ the encoder-decoder framework, which constructs the encoder by obtaining the visual representations based on the last layer of the backbone network and then feeding them into a sequence model. In this article, we propose a novel encoder structure that performs the feature extractor and the sequence modeling within a unified framework. The introduced Aggregated Temporal Convolutional Encoder (ATCE) first incorporates the temporal convolutional layers to consider the long-term temporal relationship in the encoder stage. The aggregation of these temporal convolution modules is designed to utilize visual features from different levels, by augmenting the standard architecture with deeper aggregation to better fuse information across modules. We also study the impact of different attention modules in convolutional blocks for learning accurate text representations. We conduct comparisons on several scene text recognition benchmarks for both Chinese and English; the experiments demonstrate the complementary ability with different decoder variants and the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Scene text erasing seeks to erase text contents from scene images and current state-of-the-art text erasing models are trained on large-scale synthetic data. Although data synthetic engines can provide vast amounts of annotated training samples, there are differences between synthetic and real-world data. In this paper, we employ self-supervision for feature representation on unlabeled real-world scene text images. A novel pretext task is designed to keep consistent among text stroke masks of image variants. We design the Progressive Erasing Network in order to remove residual texts. The scene text is erased progressively by leveraging the intermediate generated results which provide the foundation for subsequent higher quality results. Experiments show that our method significantly improves the generalization of the text erasing task and achieves state-of-the-art performance on public benchmarks.

Scene text removal has been widely applied in various applications due to its remarkable progress. Most of the previous methods apply text regions or strokes individually to provide text location information which exhibit distinct advantages and limitations, respectively. In this paper, we propose a novel network, namely REST, to produce promising results by modeling text region and stroke location information simultaneously. REST contains two modules: location jointly prediction module and background restoration module. Specifically, the location module aims to produce text region and stroke mask for original text images. The background restoration module treats the location masks and original images as input and generates text-removed results. Besides, we introduce the Channel-Aware Self-Attention (CASA) strategy to enhance feature representation. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the REST.
