In this work, the solar water collector flow tube geometry is modified as curved and spiral to enhance the system’s performance. The investigation is carried out experimentally under the meteorological conditions of the Kovilpatti region (9°100N, 77°520E), Tamil Nadu, India. The flow pipes of the solar water heater are made of copper material which has higher thermal conductivity to recover the water heat as thermal energy. The influence of the mass flow rate (MF) on the flow pipes with respect to the surface temperature for various configurations of the flow tubes is investigated. The two MFs of 0.0045 kg/s and 0.006 kg/s are tested. The MF of 0.006 kg/s yields the maximum efficiency of 73% compared to the other MF. The straight, curved, and spiral tubes yielded the maximum efficiency of 58%, 62%, and 69%, respectively, at 0.0045 kg/s. Similarly, the MF of 0.006 kg/s obtained an efficiency of 62%, 65%, and 73% for straight, curved, and spiral flow tubes, respectively. The economics and exergy of the system are analyzed. The maximum exergy efficiency of the collector is estimated to be 32% for the MF of 0.0045 kg/s for the spiral flow collector, and for the 0.006 kg/s MF, the obtained exergy efficiency is 27% for the spiral flow water heater. The economic analysis revealed that the expense is $0.0608 and $0.0512 worth of hot water produced for the domestic space heating.

In this research, microstructural events and mechanical behaviors in dissimilar friction stir welding (FSW) of aluminium (Al) alloy AA6082‐AA7075 joints have been evaluated to apply aerospace, defense, and military sectors. FSW parametric effects have a more significant impact on the mechanical performances and microstructure of produced joints. FSW tool rotational speed, welding speed, and tool plunge speed were chosen to make the weld joints. The rotational tool speeds of 1600 rpm and 2300 rpm, welding speeds of 40 mm/min and 60 mm/min, and tool plunge speeds of 20 mm/min and 30 mm/min were set as the upper and lower limits. A constant axial force of 5 kN was maintained throughout the joint fabrication process. A taper pin‐profiled tool was utilized to produce the butt welded joints. Mechanical properties of microhardness, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and bending strength of the joints were analyzed. The response of the stir zone microstructure to processing parameters was evaluated using optical microscopy (OM) and fractographic analysis of a tensile specimen shown by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The weld joints produced at 2300 rpm, tool traveling rate of 40 mm/min, and tool plunge speed of 30 mm/min showed the greatest tensile strength of the 191 MPa hardness of 145 Hv at the weld center and also the maximum bending strength of 114.23 N/mm2 was achieved. The lowest bending strength of 25.38 N/mm2 was obtained at 1600 rpm with 60 mm/min due to inappropriate mixing of the base metals and poor joint quality. Furthermore, this study revealed that a higher tool plunge speed facilitates the formation of equiaxed grains in the thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ) on the advancing side (AS). Additionally, the increment in tool rotational speed significantly improved the tensile strength, weld joint quality, and joint efficiency.

The thermal behavior of the biodegradable Calotropis procera (CP) particle‐reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) biocomposites was investigated. The injection molding process was used to make the composites, and the CP particle weight percentage was varied during the process (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%). The melt flow index, heat deflection temperature, Vicat softening point, and the thermal properties of the composites were determined using dynamic mechanical testing. The results were analyzed and compared to the thermal properties of the neat PLA. The results revealed the increase in thermal stability of the PLA due to the addition of CP particles. The CP particles aided in the restriction of polymer mobility, which elevated the glass transition temperature of the composite. Incorporating CP particles in the PLA can increase the PLA/CP composite utilization in heat dissipation applications.

The application of nanomaterials as a strengthening agent in the fabrication of polymer nanocomposites has gained significant attention due to distinctive properties which can be utilised in structural applications. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) and montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclay were used as filler materials to fabricate hybrid epoxy-based nanocomposites. The synergistic effect of nanomaterials on flammability and mechanical behaviour of nanocomposites were studied. Results revealed that the addition of nanofiller showcases 97% and 44.5% improvement in tensile and flexural strength. However, an increment in the percentage of filler material over 0.3% exhibits a decremental mechanical property trend. Likewise, the addition of nanofiller increases the nonignition timing of the glass-fibre-reinforced epoxy composites. Fracture surface morphology displays the occurrence of the ductile fracture mechanism owing to the presence of hybrid fillers.

The growing awareness of the environmental damage caused by petroleum‐based fibres has led to an increase in renewable and biodegradable resources. The continually growing demand for eco‐friendly and sustainable materials pushes automakers and material researchers to consider the ecological importance of their materials during fabricating, recovering, and disposal. Natural fibre‐reinforced composites (NFRC) have been introduced into the automobile market substantially over the last ten years due to their renewability, eco‐friendliness, recyclability, biodegradability, light weight, better specific strength, good resistance to impact and corrosion, abundantly available, ease of processing, and cost‐effectiveness. Due to cost‐effectiveness and weight reduction, NFRC is becoming a better replacement for petroleum/synthetic fibres like aramid, kevlar, carbon, and glass fibre‐reinforced composites, and the transportation sector has instigated the use of these materials in many applications like car interiors and exteriors, dash boards, bumpers, spoilers, seat covers, and mirror casings. NFRC with nanofillers is gaining more attention in the field of engineering, particularly for automotive, defense, building, and construction applications due to better aspect ratio, larger surface area, and attractive properties. The mechanical, tribological, and thermal properties of plant fibre‐reinforced composites can be improved through the incorporation of organic or inorganic nanofillers. The present review profoundly explores the effects of various factors influencing NFRC with nanofillers. This paper also summarises the effects of various chemical reagents, fabrication techniques, and industrial applications of NFRC.

Graphene and its derivatives have excellent properties such as high surface area, thermal, and mechanical strength, and this fact made the researchers promote them as the possible filler material for fiber-matrix composite. The current research deals with validation on the effect of graphene oxide boron nitride filler over mechanical and thermal stability of epoxy glass fiber polymer matrix composite. The objective of this experimental investigation is to develop glass fiber reinforced polymer composites with hybrid filler addition. The matrix material selected is epoxy resin, whereas the glass fiber is selected as reinforcement, while boron nitride and graphene oxide are chosen as fillers. Compression moulding methodology is followed to develop the composites with the constant percentage of fiber loading, graphene oxide filler, and varying boron nitride content from 0 to 3wt. at an equal interval of 1wt.. The developed composite is analyzed for mechanical properties, and the fractured surface is analyzed through the scanning electron microscope. The addition of hybrid fillers enhances the fiber-matrix bonding strength and improves the thermal and mechanical properties up to a specific limit. Thermal gravimetric analysis was conducted to understand the thermal behavior of composite. The results revealed that the addition of filler improved the thermal stability of the composites.
