Dust emissions from unpaved roads are one of the main pollutants affecting air quality around the world. As part of initial air quality studies in Tuxtla Gutiérrez (TGZ), Chiapas, Mexico, urban aeolian emission events from unpaved roads and simple meteorological inputs were measured in February 2014 at two different sites located within the city to characterize emissions for representative road conditions and to produce Industrial Source Complex (ISC3) model inputs. Emissions of particulate matter of aerodynamic diameter less than 10 µm (PM10) were determined for eight wind erosion events. PM10 concentrations were measured downwind from sites using a Minivol sampler during February and March 2014. Three high PM10 concentration scenarios, associated with unstable conditions generated by cold fronts (CF) were selected to simulate dust plume dispersion to identify impacted areas. Results show that unpaved roads represent a potential source of dust that affect air quality of urban regions; in this study generating emissions ≥ 1.92 × 10−3 g·m−2·s−1 when winds ≥6 m·s−1 were present. Air pollution events that exceed the Mexico national standard for 24-h average PM10 concentration (≥75 µg·m−3) were observed, impacting different areas in the city, representing a risk to human health. This demonstrates the influence of CF over southern Mexico, generating high PM10 concentrations in urban regions.

This research has identified the landscapes in the state of Chiapas (Mexico) with the best natural conditions by using the theoretical-methodological principles of complex physical geography. To achieve this goal, the biodiversity was assessed by calculating the number of vascular plant species for each landscape unit and correlated with the results of previous research regarding landscape diversity and the anthropization of vegetation cover. The results indicate that the highest levels of biodiversity correspond to the predominant and recurring landscapes. These geographical relationships indicate the influence of the geomorphological component on the distribution of biodiversity, which was quantitatively validated via two statistical correlations. It is found that the complexes of summits, hillslopes, and gullies in mountain landscapes of tectonic-karstic, tectonic-accumulative, and tectonic-intrusive origin, in temperate, semiwarm humid to subhumid, warm humid, and warm subhumid climates located in the physicogeographical regions of the Lacandona Mountains, the Southern Mountains of Chiapas, and the Western Mountains of Chiapas, all have the best preserved geographical landscapes. In recent years, however, geocomplexes have been impacted by society, which is particularly evident in the Northern Mountains of the Chiapas region. The results of this research are an important contribution to land-use planning processes, because they make it possible to objectively establish environmental policies in Chiapas. For instance, this research provides the geographic basis for modifying or promoting new natural protected areas.

El escenario de tendencia es preocupante, porque la categoría alta podría representar en el corto plazo 53% de la superficie estatal. he goal of this research is to understand and evaluate the levels of anthropic transformation on the vegetationcover inthe landscapes of Chiapas, Mexico. To achieve this goal, a pressure index was applied to the map of the physical-geographical landscapes of the Chiapas State, in a 1: 250 000 scale. The results indicate that low category occupies 29% of the surface area of the state; the high class 27%, the medium level 26%, the very low category 16%; finally, the very high level covers 2%. The high category is located in plains, piedmonts and valley landscapes in warm humid and subhumid climate. The low class is located in mountains of tectonic-intrusive, tectonic-acumulative and tectonic-karstic origin, in temperate, semi-warm humid to subhumid, and warm humid climates. The trend scenario is worrisome, because the high level could represent in the short term 53% of the surface area of the state.
