In this paper, we introduce a method to realize 3-D inhomogeneous and nearly isotropic gradient-index materials in the microwave regime. The unit cells of such gradient-index materials are drilled-hole dielectric structures, which can be easily fabricated by using the traditional printed circuit boards. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, we design and realize two functional devices in the microwave frequencies—a half-spherical Luneburg lens and a half Maxwell fisheye lens—based on 3-D gradient-index materials. The measurement results show that both devices have very good performance, which have good agreements to the numerical simulations, illustrating the great application potentials of the 3-D gradient-index materials.

Spontaneous selection of IoT devices from the head-mounted device is key for user-centered pervasive interaction. BLEselect enables users to select an unmodified Bluetooth 5.1 compatible IoT device by nodding at, pointing at, or drawing a circle in the air around it. We designed a compact antenna array that fits on a pair of smart glasses to estimate the Angle of Arrival (AoA) of IoT and wrist-worn devices' advertising signals. We then developed a sensing pipeline that supports all three selection gestures with lightweight machine learning models, which are trained in real-time for both hand gestures. Extensive characterizations and evaluations show that our system is accurate, natural, low-power, and privacy-preserving. Despite the small effective size of the antenna array, our system achieves a higher than 90% selection accuracy within a 3 meters distance in front of the user. In a user study that mimics real-life usage cases, the overall selection accuracy is 96.7% for a diverse set of 22 participants in terms of age, technology savviness, and body structures.

Ad-hoc wireless device pairing enables impromptu interactions in smart spaces, such as resource sharing and remote control. The pairing experience is mainly determined by the device association process, during which users express their pairing intentions between the advertising device and the scanning device. Currently, most wireless devices are associated by selecting the advertiser's name from a list displayed on the scanner's screen, which becomes less efficient and often misplaced as the number of wireless devices increases. In this paper, we propose Tap-to-Pair, a spontaneous device association mechanism that initiates pairing from advertising devices without hardware or firmware modifications. Tapping an area near the advertising device's antenna can change its signal strength. Users can then associate two devices by synchronizing taps on the advertising device with the blinking pattern displayed by the scanning device. By leveraging the wireless transceiver for sensing, Tap-to-Pair does not require additional resources from advertising devices and needs only a binary display (e.g. LED) on scanning devices. We conducted a user study to test users' synchronous tapping ability and demonstrated that Tap-to-Pair can reliably detect users' taps. We ran simulations to optimize parameters for the synchronization recognition algorithm and provide pattern design guidelines. We used a second user study to evaluate the on-chip performance of Tap-to-Pair. The results show that Tap-to-Pair can achieve an overall successful pairing rate of 93.7% with three scanning devices at different distances.

Temporal synchronous target selection is an association-free selection technique: users select a target by generating signals (e.g., finger taps and hand claps) in sync with its unique temporal pattern. However, classical pattern set design and input recognition algorithm of such techniques did not leverage users' behavioral information, which limits their robustness to imprecise inputs. In this paper, we improve these two key components by modeling users' interaction behavior. In the first user study, we asked users to tap a finger in sync with blinking patterns with various period and delay, and modeled their finger tapping ability using Gaussian distribution. Based on the results, we generated pattern sets for up to 22 targets that minimized the possibility of confusion due to imprecise inputs. In the second user study, we validated that the optimized pattern sets could reduce error rate from 23% to 7% for the classical Correlation recognizer. We also tested a novel Bayesian, which achieved higher selection accuracy than the Correlation recognizer when the input sequence is short. The informal evaluation results show that the selection technique can be effectively scaled to different modalities and sensing techniques.

In this paper, we present FlexTouch, a technique that enables large-scale interaction sensing beyond the spatial constraints of capacitive touchscreens using passive low-cost conductive materials. This is achieved by customizing 2D circuit-like patterns with an array of conductive strips that can be easily attached to the sensing nodes on the edge of the touchscreen. FlexTouch requires no hardware modification, and is compatible with various conductive materials (copper foil tape, silver nanoparticle ink, ITO frames, and carbon paint), as well as fabrication methods (cutting, coating, and ink-jet printing). Through a series of studies and illustrative examples, we demonstrate that FlexTouch can support long-range touch sensing for up to 4 meters and everyday object presence detection for up to 2 meters. Finally, we show the versatility and feasibility of FlexTouch through applications such as body posture recognition, human-object interaction as well as enhanced fitness training experiences.

Existing gesture interfaces only work with a fixed set of gestures defined either by interface designers or by users themselves, which introduces learning or demonstration efforts that diminish their naturalness. Humans, on the other hand, understand free-form gestures by synthesizing the gesture, context, experience, and common sense. In this way, the user does not need to learn, demonstrate, or associate gestures. We introduce GestureGPT, a free-form hand gesture understanding framework that mimics human gesture understanding procedures to enable a natural free-form gestural interface. Our framework leverages multiple Large Language Model agents to manage and synthesize gesture and context information, then infers the interaction intent by associating the gesture with an interface function. More specifically, our triple-agent framework includes a Gesture Description Agent that automatically segments and formulates natural language descriptions of hand poses and movements based on hand landmark coordinates. The description is deciphered by a Gesture Inference Agent through self-reasoning and querying about the interaction context (e.g., interaction history, gaze data), which is managed by a Context Management Agent. Following iterative exchanges, the Gesture Inference Agent discerns the user’s intent by grounding it to an interactive function. We validated our framework offline under two real-world scenarios: smart home control and online video streaming. The average zero-shot Top-1/Top-5 grounding accuracies are 44.79%/83.59% for smart home tasks and 37.50%/73.44% for video streaming tasks. We also provide an extensive discussion that includes rationale for model selection, generalizability, and future research directions for a practical system etc.
