This study investigates the thermal performance of the ventilated mask wall used in the low-income neo-vernacular dwellings designed by André Ravéreau to cope with the warm desert climate conditions of M’zab Valley, Ghardaia, in southern Algeria. This device is a ventilated façade provided with an opaque external massive cladding. It is designed to be particularly efficient in hot climates, functioning simultaneously as a brise-soleil and a ventilated façade, compared with conventional façade systems. Based on a typical experiment conducted during the summertime (12–14 August), a residential unit in Sidi Abbaz selected as a case study was modeled and calibrated using EnergyPlus (v8.4) software, and then a dynamic simulation was performed in order to assess the efficiency of the ventilated mask wall as a cooling strategy. By means of the validated thermal model, various alternatives for the façade materials were investigated, and the thermal behavior of the current ventilated mask wall was compared with a 45 cm thick limestone façade wall, and a 30 cm thick hollow clay brick wall under the same conditions. Countless benefits were achieved by the application of the mask wall system, including a stable and less fluctuant inner surface temperature, and a reduction in the incoming summer heat flux. The improvements performed, in particular the time lag of 12 h and the related decrement factor of 0.28 indicate the effectiveness of this wall system, which enabled radiant temperature drops of more than 10 °C, and an air temperature decrease of about 6 °C, during the summer sunniest hours. The results demonstrate that this solution is suitable for buildings design applications to meet the objective of low-energy demand in warm desert climates.

The Djebel Amour region, located in the Western Saharan Atlas of Algeria, hosts a vernacular mosque heritage that remains largely unexplored. This study presents the first comprehensive typo-morphological analysis of fourteen mosques dating from the 11th to the 20th century. Their original architectural state was reconstructed through the triangulation of field surveys, archival documentation, iconographic sources, and oral testimonies. A reference model based on four recurrent components—the prayer hall with its mihrab, courtyard, portico, and minaret—enabled the identification of typological constants, contextual variations, and vernacular constructive logics. The results reveal the persistence of sober and functional forms, marked by the frequent absence of a courtyard and the presence of skiffa-inspired porticos and staircase minarets. A complementary quantitative component strengthens cross-regional comparisons and situates the Djebel Amour corpus within wider North African, West African, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian vernacular mosque traditions. Beyond architectural reconstruction, this study develops an operational framework for conservation and transformation management, supported by a structured database that systematises typological, material, and construction data. While the analysis relies primarily on photogrammetric documentation, the proposed framework is compatible with international digital standards and can be expanded through methods such as 3D laser scanning, drone-based surveys, or geospatial modelling. By integrating qualitative, quantitative, and digital perspectives, this research offers practical tools for heritage authorities, local administrations, mosque committees, architects, designers, and conservation practitioners, positioning the Djebel Amour mosques as a reference model for sustainable heritage management and contextual adaptation in arid and tribal environments.

The ambiance-based approach to old urban fabrics has emerged as a response to the evolution of heritage, focusing on the spirit of place and the relationship between people and their environment. It aims to preserve the identity of architectural and urban spaces, incorporating intangible elements beyond their physical character. In Algeria, colonial-era urban fabrics continue to structure cities. Skikda, a city in eastern Algeria was created ex-nihilo during this era. In this context, Didouche Mourad Street—the main thoroughfare and structuring element of the city—constitutes the core of the analysis. This study focuses on the French colonial period (1838–1962), considered a foundational phase in the spatial and sensory formation of the street. It aims to restitute the sensory urban ambiences of this period and to analyse their evolution in order to identify sensory permanences contributing to the heritage identity of the place. A thematic content analysis was used to identify sensory ambiences, supported by NVivo software to quantify their recurrences and analyse their spatio-temporal dynamics. The findings show that some ambiences have persisted, others have disappeared, and new ones have emerged through successive transformations. By documenting the sensory history of the street, this research proposes a conceptual and methodological framework for the interpretation of heritage urban ambiences and for informing contemporary rehabilitation approaches, considering permanent ambiences as interpretative tools and reference points for understanding heritage dynamics.

French colonial mass housing estates built in Algiers between 1950 and 1962 constitute a substantial part of the city’s housing stock and continue to shape its urban structure. As aging residential environments, they present important challenges for sustainable regeneration. Despite their significance, the relationship between urban configuration and long-term physical deterioration remains poorly understood. This study establishes a georeferenced inventory of these estates by combining archival documentation and field surveys with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and space syntax analysis. Configurational properties were quantified using Normalized Angular Integration (NAIN) in DepthmapX, while the physical state of each estate was evaluated through a systematic assessment of structural elements, façades, and public spaces. The results reveal considerable variation in integration and a statistically significant relationship between its levels and physical quality. Estates occupying more privileged positions within the street network generally exhibited better maintenance and higher-quality public spaces, whereas more isolated estates experienced greater deterioration. The findings suggest that street integration is associated with estate performance, providing quantitative evidence to support sustainable regeneration planning by proposing a practical decision-support framework for identifying evidence-based resilience planning and governance priorities.
