Coronary artery stenting is commonly used for the treatment of coronary stenosis, and different stent structures indeed have various impacts on the stress distribution within the plaque and artery as well as the local hemodynamic environment. This study aims to evaluate the performance of different stent structures by characterizing the mechanical parameters after coronary stenting. Six stent structures including three commercially-shaped stents (Palmaz-Schatz-shaped, Xience Prime-shaped, and Cypher-shaped) and three author-developed stents (C-Rlink, C-Rcrown, and C-Astrut) implanted into a curved stenotic coronary artery were investigated. Structural analyses of the balloon-stent-plaque-artery system were first performed, and then followed by hemodynamic analyses. The results showed that among the three commercially-shaped stents, the Palmaz-Schatz-shaped had the least stent dogboning and recoiling, corresponding to the greatest maximum plastic strain and the largest diameter change, nevertheless, it induced the highest maximum von Mises stress on plaque, arterial intima and media. From the viewpoint of hemodynamics, the Palmaz-Schatz-shaped displayed smaller areas of adverse low wall shear stress (<0.5 Pa), low time-averaged wall shear stress (0.1). Compared to the Cypher-shaped, the C-Rcrown and C-Astrut had smaller recoiling, greater maximum plastic stain and larger diameter change, which indicated the improved mechanical performance of the Cypher-shaped stent. Moreover, both C-Rcrown and C-Astrut exhibited smaller areas of adverse low wall shear stress, and low time-averaged wall shear stress, but only the C-Rcrown displayed a smaller area of adverse high oscillating shear index. The present study evaluated and compared the performance of six different stents deployed inside a curved artery, and could be potentially utilized as a guide for the selection of suitable commercially-shaped stent for clinical application, and to provide an approach to improve the performance of the commercial stents.

The Circle of Willis (CoW) is the most important collateral pathway of the cerebral artery. The present study aims to investigate the collateral capacity of CoW with anatomical variation when unilateral internalcarotid artery (ICA) is occluded. Basing on MRI data, we have reconstructed eight 3D models with variations in the posterior circulation of the CoW and set four different degrees of stenosis in the right ICA, namely 24%, 43%, 64% and 79%, respectively. Finally, a total of 40 models are performed with computational fluid dynamics simulations. All of the simulations share the same boundary condition with static pressure and the volume flow rate (VFR) are obtained to evaluate their collateral capacity. As for the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and the anterior cerebral artery (ACA), the transitional-type model possesses the best collateral capacity. But for the posterior cerebral artery (PCA), unilateral stenosis of ICA has the weakest influence on the unilateral posterior communicating artery (PCoA) absent model. We also find that the full fetal-type posterior circle of Willis is an utmost dangerous variation which must be paid more attention. The results demonstrate that different models have different collateral capacities in coping stenosis of unilateral ICA and these differences can be reflected by different outlets. The study could be used as a reference for neurosurgeon in choosing the best treatment strategy.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer commonly used as a scaffold material to repair tissue defects, and its degradation is associated with mechanical stimulus. In this study, the effect of mechanical stimulus on the degradation of 3D-printed PLA scaffolds was investigated by in vitro experiments and an author-developed numerical model. Forty-five samples with porosity 64.8% were printed to carry out the degradation experiment within 90 days. Statistical analyses of the mass, volume fraction, Young’s modulus, and number average molecular weight were made, and the in vitro experiments were further used to verify the proposed numerical model of the scaffold degradation. The results indicated that the mechanical stimulus accelerated the degradation of the PLA scaffold, and the higher mechanical stimulus led to a faster degradation of the scaffolds at the late stage of the degradation process. In addition, the Young’s modulus and the normalized number average molecular weight of the PLA scaffolds between the experiments and the numerical simulations were comparable, especially for the number average molecular weight. The present study could be helpful in the design of the biodegradable PLA scaffolds.
