Dr. Guanglei Ma received his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from School of Pharmacy, Fudan University, in 2018. Shortly thereafter, he joined the School of Biological Sciences at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, as a postdoctoral research fellow. In 2023, he returned to China and was appointed as a Research Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Zhejiang University. He is also a core young faculty member of State Key Laboratory for Innovative Chinese Medicine.
Dr. Ma’s research is positioned at the intersection of natural product chemistry, biosynthesis, and synthetic biology. His work focuses on mining biosynthetic gene clusters, elucidating enzymatic mechanisms, and refactoring biosynthetic pathways to discover and engineer medicinally valuable natural products. By integrating multi-omics analysis, enzymology, and synthetic biology tools, his group aims to uncover novel bioactive molecules and reconstruct their biosynthetic logic in microbial and plant systems. His long-term goal is to employ the language of chemistry to decipher biological questions underlying the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, with a particular emphasis on the biosynthetic mechanisms and artificial creation of active ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine. To date, Dr. Ma has published more than 40 research papers in leading international journals, including Journal of the American Chemical Society, JACS Au, and Chemical Communications.
