Dr. Hornillos is an organic and organometallic chemist whose research focuses on asymmetric catalysis and cross-coupling, while also encompassing synthetic methodology, ligand design, and fluorescent labeling. He has authored 72 publications and received 2,427 citations (h-index 31, WOS).
He began his scientific career at the University of Castilla-La Mancha, where he prepared N-heterocyclic carbene and pincer-based metallodendrimers with catalytic applications. He subsequently completed his PhD at the Institute of Physical Chemistry (IQFR-CSIC, Madrid), developing lipid-based drug candidates that incorporate reactive and fluorescent motifs without compromising biological activity, and consolidating a strong background in fluorescence spectroscopy. This stage was complemented by a research stay at Novartis (Vienna), and he earned his doctorate in 2009 (Excellent cum laude).
He then joined Prof. Ben L. Feringa’s group at the University of Groningen through a Spanish Government postdoctoral fellowship, later becoming a Senior Researcher, and contributed to key advances in enantioselective metal catalysis and cross-coupling. In 2015, he returned to Spain with a Talent Hub Fellowship at IIQ-CSIC (Seville) and He later obtained a Ramón y Cajal contract at the University of Seville and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2024. His group has developed a highly cited stereoselective platform for accessing atropoisomeric compouds, supporting three completed PhD theses.
