Potato leaf disease detection in an early stage is challenging because of variations in crop species, crop diseases symptoms and environmental factors. These factors make it difficult to detect potato leaf diseases in the early stage. Various machine learning techniques have been developed to detect potato leaf diseases. However, the existing methods cannot detect crop species and crop diseases in general because these models are trained and tested on images of plant leaves of a specific region. In this research, a multi-level deep learning model for potato leaf disease recognition has developed. At the first level, it extracts the potato leaves from the potato plant image using the YOLOv5 image segmentation technique. At the second level, a novel deep learning technique has been developed using a convolutional neural network to detect the early blight and late blight potato diseases from potato leaf images. The proposed potato leaf disease detection model was trained and tested on a potato leaf disease dataset. The potato leaf disease dataset contains 4062 images collected from the Central Punjab region of Pakistan. The proposed deep learning technique achieved 99.75% accuracy on the potato leaf disease dataset. The performance of the proposed techniques was also evaluated on the PlantVillage dataset. The proposed technique is also compared with the state-of-the-art models and achieved significantly concerning the accuracy and computational cost.

Objective : Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a retinal disease that can cause damage to blood vessels in the eye, that is the major cause of impaired vision or blindness, if not treated early. Manual detection of diabetic retinopathy is time-consuming and prone to human error due to the complex structure of the eye. Methods & Results : various automatic techniques have been proposed to detect diabetic retinopathy from fundus images. However, these techniques are limited in their ability to capture the complex features underlying diabetic retinopathy, particularly in the early stages. In this study, we propose a novel approach to detect diabetic retinopathy using a convolutional neural network (CNN) model. The proposed model extracts features using two different deep learning (DL) models, Resnet50 and Inceptionv3, and concatenates them before feeding them into the CNN for classification. The proposed model is evaluated on a publicly available dataset of fundus images. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed CNN model achieves higher accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and f1 score compared to state-of-the-art methods, with respective scores of 96.85%, 99.28%, 98.92%, 96.46%, and 98.65%.

Melanoma is a fatal type of skin cancer; the fury spread results in a high fatality rate when the malignancy is not treated at an initial stage. The patients’ lives can be saved by accurately detecting skin cancer at an initial stage. A quick and precise diagnosis might help increase the patient’s survival rate. It necessitates the development of a computer-assisted diagnostic support system. This research proposes a novel deep transfer learning model for melanoma classification using MobileNetV2. The MobileNetV2 is a deep convolutional neural network that classifies the sample skin lesions as malignant or benign. The performance of the proposed deep learning model is evaluated using the ISIC 2020 dataset. The dataset contains less than 2% malignant samples, raising the class imbalance. Various data augmentation techniques were applied to tackle the class imbalance issue and add diversity to the dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed deep learning technique outperforms state-of-the-art deep learning techniques in terms of accuracy and computational cost.

Traffic congestion is one of the most notable urban transport problems, as it causes high energy consumption and air pollution. Unavailability of free parking spaces is one of the major reasons for traffic jams. Congestion and parking are interrelated because searching for a free parking spot creates additional delays and increase local circulation. In the center of large cities, 10% of the traffic circulation is due to cruising, as drivers nearly spend 20 min searching for free parking space. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a parking space availability prediction system that can inform the drivers in advance about the location-wise, day-wise, and hour-wise occupancy of parking lots. In this paper, we proposed a framework based on a deep long short term memory network to predict the availability of parking space with the integration of Internet of Things (IoT), cloud technology, and sensor networks. We use the Birmingham parking sensors dataset to evaluate the performance of deep long short term memory networks. Three types of experiments are performed to predict the availability of free parking space which is based on location, days of a week, and working hours of a day. The experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art prediction models.

Data preprocessing is crucial in the Machine Learning pipeline because the models’ learning ability directly affects the quality of data and the underlying information acquired from this stage. Nevertheless, surprisingly, there are many alternatives for each transformation task, which makes an inexperienced user overwhelmed. A simple Python-based Auto-preprocessing architecture for Automated Machine Learning is developed to offer automated, interactive, and data-driven support to help the users perform data preprocessing tasks efficiently. The suggested method provides valuable insights into a dataset and can handle standard data preprocessing tasks adeptly. Initially, it detects the data problem and presents it to the end-user using compelling visualizations. Then, it recommends the most effective data cleaning and preparation method to the user after evaluating the state-of-the-art candidate techniques. For evaluation, the proposed architecture is employed on ten different and diverse datasets for automatic data preprocessing before passing it to an ML algorithm. The results are then compared with the results generated by the same ML algorithm but implemented on manually preprocessed data. The results have shown that not only did this approach make the whole process uncomplicated and facile, but it was also able to improve the performance of the model significantly.

Glaucoma, an eye disease, occurs due to Retinal damages and it is an ordinary cause of blindness. Most of the available examining procedures are too long and require manual instructions to use them. In this work, we proposed a multi-level deep convolutional neural network (ML-DCNN) architecture on retinal fundus images to diagnose glaucoma. We collected a retinal fundus images database from the local hospital. The fundus images are pre-processed by an adaptive histogram equalizer to reduce the noise of images. The ML-DCNN architecture is used for features extraction and classification into two phases, one for glaucoma detection known as detection-net and the second one is classification-net used for classification of affected retinal glaucoma images into three different categories: Advanced, Moderate and Early. The proposed model is tested on 1338 retinal glaucoma images and performance is measured in the form of different statistical terms known as sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP), accuracy (ACC), and precision (PRE). On average, SE of 97.04%, SP of 98.99%, ACC of 99.39%, and PRC of 98.2% are achieved. The obtained outcomes are comparable to the state-of-the-art systems and achieved competitive results to solve the glaucoma eye disease problems for complex glaucoma eye disease cases.
