Dr. Piletz is Visiting Professor in the Department of Biology at Mississippi College. Until 2021, he taught Enteric Interaction Research and Enteric Neuronal Signaling Research. His expertise is psychopharmacology. Dr. Piletz has over 25 years of published research concerning the decarboxylated metabolite of arginine, agmatine, a novel neurotransmitter. Because agmatine is highly enriched in the GI tract and made by some enteric bacteria, he entered the field of the microbiome. The current paper culminates 8 years of research in his laboratory on gut-to-neuron signaling. Dr. Piletz has published over 100 original research articles and has given hundreds of presentations at conferences. Dr. Piletz has been a Visiting Professor in Australia, China, and South Korea. He currently serves as Coordinator of International Student Services at Mississippi College.
