Prof. Dr. Javier Buesa

Javier Buesa attended the Medical Faculty of the University of Zaragoza, Spain, and earned his PhD at the University of Valencia in 1983. After graduation he did post-doctoral training on Clinical Virology at the Regional Virus Laboratory (Dr. Flewett), East Birmingham Hospital, U.K., and on Viral Immunology in the Department of Neuropharmacology (Dr. Oldstone) at Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, USA. He investigates the pathogenesis and immunity of enteric viral infections, mainly caused by rotaviruses and noroviruses. He has participated in many national and European research projects, and his laboratory contributes to the surveillance of norovirus and rotavirus infections in Europe. His current research focuses on virus evolution and viral receptors, mechanisms of protection against enteric viruses and the role of probiotic bacteria in viral infections. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, 12 book chapters and holds two international patents. He is invited reviewer for more than 20 journals and research grants. He is a member of the Rotavirus Classification Working Group (RCWG), American Society for Microbiology (ASM), European Society for Clinical Virology (ESCV), Spanish Society for Virology (SEV), and Spanish Society for Infectious Diseases & Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC).
