Irena Žmak, born in 1974, is a Full Professor at the Department of Materials at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, where she completed her PhD studies under the mentorship of Professor Emeritus Tomislav Filetin with the thesis titled “Modeling the structure and properties of nodular cast iron using neural networks”. She is a member of the National Council for Higher Education, Science, and Technological Development, Parent Committee for Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Basic Technical Sciences. She is a member of the European Ceramics Society and the Croatian Chemical Society. She has been a member of the local editorial board of the journal Transactions of FAMENA since 2019. She has served as a guest editor for various special issues of international scientific journals. In 1994 and 1996, she was honored with the Rector's Award. Additionally, she received the Dean's Award and the “Davorin Bazjanac” Award in 1996 for her academic excellence, as well as the Faculty Medal for the highest academic standing. She participated in several scientific and professional projects and led one. Her scientific and professional interests include technical ceramics, materials recycling, sustainability in materials engineering, artificial neural networks, and other modelling of materials properties. She is also keenly interested in foreign languages.
