Since 2001, when Javier C. Alvarez obtained his bachelor's degree in biology, he has been conducting diverse research projects mainly focused on the molecular and genetic dynamics of fungus–plant interactions on different plant crops of agronomic interest. During these years he has been using bioinformatic tools and genomics to study a wide range of microorganisms for application in molecular phytopathology and biotechnology. Since 2013, he has held a full-time administrative and professorial position at EAFIT University, where he is currently teaching genetics, applied microbiology, and bioinformatics to undergraduate and graduate students.
