Concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cd) in cassava grown on farmlands along highways in Owerri, was investigated. Cassava leaves and root samples were harvested from cassava farms along three major roads with high traffic density and another rural road that served as control location. Standard laboratory procedures to determine the concentration of these metals were adopted using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The metal concentrations in mg/kg in cassava root showed high levels of Cu (6.29±0.0346), Zn (8.49±2.243), Pb (0.5267±0.3156) and Cd (0.1167±0.0833). The concentrations of the heavy metals in the cassava leaves were of the order: Zn > Cu >Pb> Ni > Cd. Soil plant transfer factor values for all the metals in all the sites indicated medium accumulation. Heavy metal concentrations in soil showed significant correlation with concentrations in cassava root with no significant statistical differences in bioaccumulation of heavy metals in different parts of cassava. The overall results showed evidence of some heavy metal pollution on the soils and cassava plant.

Neem (Azadirachta Indica)is a plant that has been used as traditional medicine for a household remedy against various human ailments since ancient times. The objective of this study was to determine the phytoconstituents and antimicrobial activities of aqueous and methanol extracts of A. indica leaves. Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis was carried out using the standard method of Association of Official Analytical Chemist and the antimicrobial activity of the concentrated extracts was evaluated by determination of the diameter of zone of inhibition against the microorganisms using the agar well diffusion method. Phytochemical screening of the leaves gave a positive result for saponins, tannins, steroids, glycoside, terpenoids, flavonoids, and alkaloids. The antimicrobial results show that both plant extracts had antimicrobial activity against the test organisms, the aqueous extracts were found to show the greater antimicrobial effect on Shigellasp (10.0±1.0 mm), Staphylococcus sp (10.0±1.0 mm), Penicilliumsp (9.2±0.8 mm) and Mould (10.2±1.3 mm) while methanol extract shows maximum efficacy on E. coli (26±1.0 mm), Vibrio sp (10.6±0.6 mm) and Yeast (9.2±0.3 mm). Therefore, these findings support the traditional knowledge of local users and it is a preliminary, scientific, validation for the use of neem leaves for the antimicrobial activity to promote proper conservation and sustainable use of the plant resources.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which are environmentally prevalent compounds, have the ability to interact with the body's endocrine system and thus exert detrimental effects on human health. Despite persistent concerns over public health, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) remain integral components of commonplace consumer products, rendering them ubiquitous pollutants for individuals. In light of the numerous epidemiological and experimental studies that have established a connection between endocrine-disrupting chemicals and adverse effects on human health, there has been an increased emphasis on mitigating human exposure to these compounds. There exists a correlation between endocrine-disrupting drugs and adverse impacts on human health, as well as an elevated susceptibility to hormone-sensitive cancers such as breast, uterine, ovarian, prostate, and thyroid cancers. The objective of this study was to provide a comprehensive overview of previous studies investigating the relationship between endocrine-disrupting chemicals and the development of cancer.

The utilisation of biomarkers as early warning indicators in assessing illness risk has significantly risen during the past decade. Biomarkers serve as indications of standard biological processes, disease mechanisms, or pharmacological responses to treatment. The utilisation and recognition of biomarkers in medicine and clinical practice significantly influence society. Consequently, its imperative to identify specific biomarkers by noninvasive method. One method involves a proteome or glycoproteomic analysis that primarily identifies proteins/glycoproteins in tissues and serum. Numerous FDA-approved proteins utilised as cancer biomarkers exhibit suboptimal sensitivities for accurate disease identification. The expression of phosphoproteins correlates with a distinct stage of a given disease, exhibiting excellent sensitivity and specificity. This chapter provides an introduction of biomarkers, reviews their sources, explores the protein phosphorylation workflow in biomarker development, analyses omics technologies in biomarker discovery, and examines future prospects in this field.

There is a growing need for food that fulfils high safety and quality standards, so it is necessary to have a precise, efficient, and unbiased method for evaluating these aspects in food items. The food business is increasingly utilising computer vision technologies for the aim of quality assurance. These technologies essentially take the place of human inspectors in assessing various quality parameters of both raw and processed foods. A computer vision system is an automated, non-destructive, and cost-effective solution. Image-based inspection has multiple applications in the food industry. Abundant evidence indicates that it can reliably assess and appraise fresh food. Computer vision may now be used to assess the quality of various food items such as meat, fish, pizza, cheese, and bread. Therefore, this chapter provides summary of the latest developments in the food industry, as well as describe the key elements of a computer vision system, emphasise significant aspects of image processing techniques, and underscore the significance of these approaches.
