Biography

I am a Veterinarian expert in Animal Breeding and Genetics. My phD thesis was about the positional cloning of the myostatin gene (Grobet, Royo et al., 1997. Nat. Genet) the gene responsible for the bovine hereditary muscular hypertrophy, one of the most important traits in Animal Production. I continue working in the characterization of animal populations, in all the aspects related to the genetic diversity evaluation and conservation, in both domestic as well as wild animals. One of my achievements was the study of the Y chromosome, characterizing the male lineages in domestic ruminants. These studies highlight the importance of the Iberian Peninsula in the domestication or, at least, in the genetic stock of bos taurus bovines. I have been studying the embryo quality, by means of the differential gene expression of genes involved in the development and differentiation of the bovine embryo produced in vitro. I also collaborate in animal health projects, using the molecular biology techniques in the diagnostic and identification of infectious diseases in both, livestock and its neighbour’s wild animals. Nowadays, I work on both the characterization of extensive production systems, and the certification of local agro food products using miRNA as biomarkers.
