Prof. Dr. Maria Paula Macedo is a full Professor at the NOVA Medical School. She has been devoted to the promotion and control of obesity and diabetes in Portugal and abroad. She started the Portuguese Diabetes Society's national research network and has been actively involved in the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and the International Diabetes Federation. She is on the steering committee of the European NAFLD study and holds board positions at the European Society for Clinical Investigation and the Global NASH Council. Presently she is a member of the Pedagogic Council at the NOVA Medical School, Co-Coordinator of the APDP-Education and Research Center, and Member of the Direction of APDP-Diabetes Portugal. She was the advisor in the health sciences to the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education. Currently, she is Vice-President of the Portuguese Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation Agency. Her major advances in science were related to (i) the intertwining of dysmetabolism and the central nervous system; (ii) autonomic nervous system control of postprandial glucose homeostasis; (iii) the nutritional impact on hepatic subclinical inflammatory states governance of dysmetabolism and hepatic insulin clearance; (iv) liver disease progression (v) deep phenotyping based on organ communication: a role for extracellular vesicles (VI) the development of integrative tools to empower patients in disease management, clinical research, and home care.
