The aim of this study is to gather specific data concerning smoking, elucidate the reasons behind individuals' initiation and cessation of smoking, explore strategies for preventing smoking initiation, and understand how to provide support for individuals who desire to quit. A cross-sectional study was conducted via face-to-face surveys on 309 individuals selected through systematic sampling among 5880 individuals aged 15 and over registered at a family health center in the Kayapınar district of Diyarbakır province in Türkiye between December 2016 and January 2017. The study found that 30.4% of the participants were current smokers, while 14.6% were quitters. Approximately 92% of the participants supported the law banning tobacco use in enclosed spaces. It was determined that before the age of 18, 78% of individuals tried smoking for the first time, and 47.5% of them started smoking regularly. The most common reasons for starting smoking were cited as peer influence, curiosity, and emulation. 66.3% of the participants indicated their support for a government-imposed complete ban, while 65% of smokers stated that they would quit smoking if such a prohibition were in place. The study identified a high prevalence of smoking in the region, and smoking initiation occurs at young ages. A notable proportion of smoking participants expressed a desire to quit; however, there appears to be a lack of support for those seeking to quit.

Objective In recent years, due to the limited number of novel antibiotics and the developing resistance to existing ones have become significant challenges. Colistin, an antibiotic known for its efficacy against some gram-negative bacteria especially Acinetobacter spp. and Klebsiella spp., was previously restricted due to its adverse effects, has reintroduced into clinical practice as a last-resort treatment option. In this study, it was aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the thesis studies on colistin in Turkey. Methods In this descriptive study, a search was made on the database of the National Thesis Center of the Council of Higher Education of Turkey, which includes theses written in Turkey, on December 10, 2024, using the keyword "colistin". 121 theses identified as a result of the screening were included in the study without applying any exclusion criteria. The data obtained are presented as numbers and percentages. Results It was determined that the majority of the studies were medical specialty theses. There has been an increase in the number of theses on colistin over the years, and the most studies were conducted in 2021. Most studies were conducted in the fields of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. The studies focused not only on the efficacy of colistin but also on resistance mechanisms and side effect profiles. Among the 15 studies that specifically evaluated nephrotoxicity in human subjects, an average nephrotoxicity rate of 50% was reported. Conclusion This study reveals the growing academic interest and research trends regarding colistin in Türkiye. The findings show that as colistin re-enters clinical practice, its place in the scientific literature is strengthened. Further research on colistin’s efficacy and adverse effect profile is essential to provide comprehensive insights for its clinical use.

Aims: This study aims to evaluate the quality, reliability, and content of YouTube videos on cholesterol management, analyse their impact on viewers through comment assessment, and contribute to understanding the influence of digital media on health-related decision-making. Methods and results: A descriptive analysis was conducted on YouTube videos obtained using four search queries: ‘high cholesterol treatment,’ ‘high cholesterol drugs,’ ‘high cholesterol medications,’ and ‘high cholesterol pills.’ 105 videos meeting the inclusion criteria were analysed. The videos were scored using the Global Quality Scale (GQS), Modified DISCERN, and JAMA benchmark criteria. Sentiment analysis of comments was conducted, and the presence of misinformation, marketing content, and alternative therapy emphasis was evaluated. The analysed videos amassed 32 565 336 views, with over 50 000 comments. Notably, 18% of the videos rejected cholesterol-lowering medications, and 21% contained misinformation. Videos emphasizing alternative therapies were more likely to include marketing content (70%) and misinformation (43%). Most videos had low to moderate quality and reliability. Independent doctors were the most frequent publishers (55.2%), but their videos exhibited the highest rate of misinformation (29%). Conclusion: YouTube serves as a widely used yet unreliable source of health information on cholesterol treatments. The prevalence of misinformation, particularly in videos by healthcare professionals, is remarkable. Proactive efforts by credible institutions to disseminate accurate content on this platform are critical.

Objective: This study aimed to retrospectively analyze premature deaths (aged 18–60 years) over a five-year period in two Turkish hospitals to determine their causes and factors associated with cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality.Materials and Methods: Data from 531 non-COVID-19, non-traumatic deaths (January 2021–January 2026) were analyzed using hospital information systems. Demographic characteristics, comorbidities, hospital admission frequency, and coronary angiography findings were recorded. Results: Of 531 cases, 58.6% were male and 58.4% were aged 50–60 years. The most common pre-existing diagnosis was cancer (32.8%), followed by hypertension (18.3%), diabetes mellitus (15.1%), and coronary artery disease (14.5%). Cardiovascular diseases were the leading cause of death (32.6%), with cancer second (25.4%). Coronary angiography was performed in only 27.7% of patients who died from cardiovascular causes; of these, 82% had ≥90% stenosis. Age 40 to under 50 years and coronary artery disease were independently associated with cardiovascular death. Male sex was associated with cardiovascular death after adjustment for age (aOR 1.67, p=0.009). Each additional hospital admission in the preceding year was associated with 10% lower adjusted odds (aOR 0.90, p

Aim: Assisted reproductive techniques (ART) have made significant progress in infertility treatment and have found a wide range of applications with various methods, especially in vitro fertilization. Today, digital platforms such as YouTube have become an important resource for individuals seeking information about ART. However, uncertainties about the reliability and quality of this content pose a potential risk for viewers. This study aims to assess the quality and reliability of ART-related videos on YouTube. Methods: 76 videos were analyzed by applying elimination criteria from 350 videos uploaded between October 1, 2014, and October 1, 2024. These videos were obtained through the YouTube Data API v3 by searching seven different terms related to in vitro fertilization and infertility. In addition to descriptive statistics on video features, the Global Quality Scale (GQS), modified DISCERN, JAMA and UTvAC scales were used to evaluate the quality of the videos. Additionally, sentiment analysis was conducted based on the comments of the videos. Results: It was determined that the majority of the analyzed videos were at a medium quality level. While the JAMA scores indicate that most of the videos are of low quality, the GQS and modified DISCERN scores suggest that most videos fall within the medium-quality range. According to UTvAC, most videos are just below the high-quality limit. The majority of videos were uploaded by doctor-independent influencers (32.9%), non-governmental organizations (25.0%), and news/media (21.1%) channels. The positive comment percentage was found to be 28%, indicating that the videos were generally poorly appreciated by viewers. Conclusion: This study revealed that the information quality and reliability of ART videos on YouTube are generally moderate. The findings of the study show that there is a significant need for improvements in digital health communication and educational content production. How to cite this article Demirtaş S, Gördük MN.
