Dr. Ryo Ozuru

Biography

I am a Senior Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Fukuoka University's Faculty of Medicine. My research focuses on the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, with a primary interest in the spirochete Leptospira, the causative agent of leptospirosis. I investigate the molecular mechanisms of bacterial colonization and aim to apply these findings to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. I received my B.S. in Biomedical Science (2011), M.Sc. in Systems Life Sciences (2013), and Ph.D. in Medicine (2017) from Kyushu University. My doctoral dissertation, "Adipose tissue is the first colonization site of Leptospira interrogans in subcutaneously infected hamsters," established the foundation for my current research on leptospiral pathogenesis. I began my academic career as an Assistant Professor at Tottori University (2015-2021) before moving to Fukuoka University in 2021, where I was promoted to Senior Assistant Professor in October 2022. I have published numerous peer-reviewed articles on my research, which includes developing a machine-learning model for leptospirosis diagnosis and investigating host-pathogen interactions in various bacterial and viral infections. My primary research theme remains the colonization mechanism of Leptospira in adipose tissue.
