Biography

I am an award-winning assistant professor and researcher with a significant record of peer-reviewed publications and funded European grants. I am the first doctorate researcher in Portugal who completed a PhD in the area of microwave medical imaging, and initiated the first research efforts in this area at a national level. I was also the youngest COST Action chair, with the COST Action TD1301. Other past and current European funding I have secured include a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship (FP7), as the main researcher, and a Marie Sklowdoska-Curie Action Innovative Training Networks (H2020), as a beneficiary. I currently am a researcher in Instituto de Biofísica e Engenharia Biomédica (Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering), developing microwave imaging techniques to detect and classify breast cancer as well as metastasised axillary lymph nodes. I have other research interests which cover machine learning modelling techniques and more general biomedical engineering and applied electronic engineering topics. I thrive through continuing education and keep updated by regularly meeting peers in the area – to whom I continuously present my work, in order to receive feedback to update and improve my research. I am the author of 28 journal papers, 50 conference proceedings and editor/author of 3 books. I have supervised (past and ongoing) the work of 6 PhD students and 27 Masters students, among other undergraduate scientific projects (over 20).
