Sergi Maicas Prieto was born in Castelló de la Plana in 1969. He graduated in biological sciences (biochemistry specialty) in 1992 and received a doctorate in microbiology from the University of Valencia in 1998, with short stays at the University of Bath and at the Research Institute Cytological of València. Later, he joined as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (CSIC). From 2002 to 2010, he made his dedication in private companies (biotechnology sector) compatible with teaching at the Cardenal Herrera CEU University and the University of Valencia. His research centers focus on two areas: wine microbiota and infections caused by the Candida fungus. He is currently a professor at the Department of Microbiology and Ecology and is director of the master's degree in research in molecular, cellular, and genetic biology at the University of Valencia. Since 2011, has actively participated in the microbiology teaching and dissemination group (DDM-SEM), being also a member of the community manager group of their social networks. He also coordinates different educational innovation projects in areas related to microbiology and molecular biology.
