Biography

Dr. Stephanie Bishop (PhD, she/her) is a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)-funded Postdoctoral Fellow in the Lewis Research Group at the University of Calgary, Canada. She uses liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based approaches to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial infections and microbial community metabolism. After earning a BSc. in Chemistry and Spanish from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), her PhD studies in Analytical Chemistry at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (Kelowna, Canada) examined the effects of different environmental factors on cyanobacterial growth and metabolism. Stephanie is currently using her expertise in analytical chemistry and microbiology to investigate the role of metabolism in shaping human bacterial infections, including gonorrhea, and how metabolic adaptations in pathogenic bacteria may contribute to the spread of antimicrobial resistance. For this work, she has received several awards, including early career travel awards for the Metabolomics Society conference (2023) and Metabolomics Association of North America conferences (2022/2023), as well as the Postdoctoral Innovation Fellowship (2023) and the Ed McCauley Postdoctoral Research Excellence Award (2023) from UCalgary.
