I am a Pediatric Neurosurgeon with particular interests in Epilepsy, Hydrocephalus, Sustainable Health Engineering and Global Health. I was the Founding Director of the Center for Neural Engineering at Penn State, and wrote the first book on Neural Control Engineering, published by the MIT Press in 2012. I serve on a few too many editorial boards and am a fellow of a few too many professional organizations. I received the NIH Director's Pioneer and Transformative Awards in 2015 and 2018, which have enabled me to focus on sustainable control of infant infections in the developing world. Such infections continue to take the lives of nearly a million infants a year globally, and in the survivors generate the largest group of infant hydrocephalus cases and the greatest need for neurosurgery in young children worldwide. This work has evolved into an exploration of what I call Predictive Personalized Public Health (P3H), which a large team of us are pursuing while we also struggle to help in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic with our methods. When time permits I play the viola in the Nittany Valley Symphony in an out of tune manner.
