Demand-side management (DSM) is a significant component of the smart grid. DSM without sufficient generation capabilities cannot be realized; taking that concern into account, the integration of distributed energy resources (solar, wind, waste-to-energy, EV, or storage systems) has brought effective transformation and challenges to the smart grid. In this review article, it is noted that to overcome these issues, it is crucial to analyze demand-side management from the generation point of view in considering various operational constraints and objectives and identifying multiple factors that affect better planning, scheduling, and management. In this paper, gaps in the research and possible prospects are discussed briefly to provide a proper insight into the current implementation of DSM using distributed energy resources and storage. With the expectation of an increase in the adoption of various types of distributed generation, it is estimated that DSM operations can offer a valuable opportunity for customers and utility aggregators to become active participants in the scheduling, dispatch, and market-oriented trading of energy. This review of DSM will help develop better energy management strategies and reduce system uncertainties, variations, and constraints.
Power quality (PQ) monitoring and detection has emerged as an essential requirement due to the proliferation of sensitive power electronic interfacing devices, electric vehicle charging stations, energy storage devices, and distributed generation energy sources in the recent smart grid and microgrid scenarios. Even though, to date, the traditional approaches play a vital role in providing a solution to the above issue, the limitations, such as the requirement of significant human effort and not being scalable for large-scale power systems, force us to think of alternative approaches. Looking at a better perspective, deep-learning (DL) has gained the main attraction for various researchers due to its inherent capability to classify the data by extracting dominating and prominent features. This manuscript attempts to provide a comprehensive review of PQ detection and classification based on DL approaches to explore its potential, efficiency, and consistency to produce results accurately. In addition, this state-of-the-art review offers an overview of the novel concepts and the step-by-step method for detecting and classifying PQ events. This review has been presented categorically with DL approaches, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), autoencoders, and recurrent neural networks (RNNs), to analyze PQ data. This paper also highlights the challenges and limitations of using DL for PQ analysis, and identifies potential areas for future research. This review concludes that DL algorithms have shown promising PQ detection and classification results, and could replace traditional methods.

Demand-side management (DSM) plays a significant function in the smart distribution system to make informed decisions from both the consumer and supplier side with regards to energy consumption to redesign the load profile and to decrease the peak load demand. This study extensively reviews the demand-side management (DSM) strategies along with both demand response and energy efficiency policies. The major objective of this paper is to enumerate the relevant features responsible to strengthen the DSM effectively, particularly for residential energy demand and the limits to energy indicators. Secondly, the large untapped and hidden potential and the associated barriers to energy efficiency enhancement are focused and surveyed for formulating a better number of potential policy responses. This further explores the portfolio approach with bundled strategies to reflect on the power market through enhancing the strength of individual residential measures through complementary policies to reduce the weaknesses. This concludes at last with the findings of possible holistic measures related to various approaches and attributes findings that reinforce the DSM strategies to enhance energy management and cost-effectiveness. Apart from that the architecture, formulation of optimization problems, and various approaches are presented to help the readers to develop research in this direction to maximize the total system peak demand, overall load factor, and utility revenue with the minimized customer electric bill.
