Over the years, he has applied performance modeling techniques to understand issues relevant to operation, maintenance, control, and techno-economic environmental risk analysis (TERA). During the course of his academic journey, Dr. Chen has made important and novel contributions to developing nonlinear model-based methods for performance modeling and diagnostics of gas turbine engines operating in dynamic conditions. This work has resulted in numerous high-impact factor journal publications and prestigious international conference publications concerned with a wide range of engineering and scientific disciplines, such as aircraft propulsion, condition-based maintenance, and techno-economic studies. He has published articles in high-impact journals such as Applied Energy, Energy Conversion and Management, Energy, and Applied Thermal Engineering. One of his works won the Best Paper Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Turbo Expo Industrial, and Cogeneration. He has secured research income of more than 10.1 million RMB.
