Thiago Dutra dos Santos earned his Master’s degree from Rio de Janeiro State University in 2006, after graduating in Geology from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro in 2004. Since 2010, he has served as a geoscience researcher at the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB/CPRM), in the Land Management and Disaster Prevention Department. He has contributed to geotechnical surveys, national risk assessment programs, and environmental research, with emphasis on hazard prevention and land-use planning. He also participated in international cooperation projects, including the Brazil–Japan GIDES initiative (2013–2017), which aimed to strengthen national integrated disaster risk management strategies. Currently, he is pursuing a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Tsukuba, in the Laboratory of Environmental Disaster Prevention Research. His research focuses on geohazards, examining the combined influence of climate extremes and urban vulnerability on hydrological disasters. He conducts critical analyses of federal risk assessment frameworks and develops predictive models for landslide runout distance using linear and non-linear methods. His professional and academic journey reflects a commitment to integrating applied geosciences, evidence-based methodologies, and innovative modeling to strengthen resilience and support decision-making in disaster risk management, particularly in resource-constrained regions.
