Biography

Thiago Teixeira Santos was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1979. He received the B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of São Paulo in 2000, 2004, and 2009, respectively. In 2010, he joined the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) as a full-time researcher, where he is currently based at Embrapa Agricultura Digital in Campinas. His research spans computer vision, machine learning, and robotics applied to agriculture, with a focus on precision agriculture and image-based plant phenotyping. Dr. Santos has developed methodologies based on SLAM and multi-view stereo for 3-D reconstruction of plants—both in pots and in the field—and for extracting morphological measurements from these three-dimensional models. He has also supported Embrapa's research teams in extracting agriculturally relevant features from 2-D images across the visible and infrared spectra, as well as in multivariate analysis of phenomic data. More recently, his work has expanded to agricultural robotics, mobile sensing platforms, and multi-sensor fusion integrating GNSS, IMU, LiDAR, and stereo cameras. Dr. Santos serves as an ad hoc reviewer for FAPESP (São Paulo State Funding Agency) and for journals including Computers and Electronics in Agriculture, among others. His areas of expertise include deep learning, unmanned aerial vehicles, GIS, multi-view computer vision, SLAM, sensor fusion, and agricultural robotics.
