Machine learning, particularly deep learning (DL), has become a central and state-of-the-art method for several computer vision applications and remote sensing (RS) image processing. Researchers are continually trying to improve the performance of the DL methods by developing new architectural designs of the networks and/or developing new techniques, such as attention mechanisms. Since the attention mechanism has been proposed, regardless of its type, it has been increasingly used for diverse RS applications to improve the performances of the existing DL methods. However, these methods are scattered over different studies impeding the selection and application of the feasible approaches. This study provides an overview of the developed attention mechanisms and how to integrate them with different deep learning neural network architectures. In addition, it aims to investigate the effect of the attention mechanism on deep learning-based RS image processing. We identified and analyzed the advances in the corresponding attention mechanism-based deep learning (At-DL) methods. A systematic literature review was performed to identify the trends in publications, publishers, improved DL methods, data types used, attention types used, overall accuracies achieved using At-DL methods, and extracted the current research directions, weaknesses, and open problems to provide insights and recommendations for future studies. For this, five main research questions were formulated to extract the required data and information from the literature. Furthermore, we categorized the papers regarding the addressed RS image processing tasks (e.g., image classification, object detection, and change detection) and discussed the results within each group. In total, 270 papers were retrieved, of which 176 papers were selected according to the defined exclusion criteria for further analysis and detailed review. The results reveal that most of the papers reported an increase in overall accuracy when using the attention mechanism within the DL methods for image classification, image segmentation, change detection, and object detection using remote sensing images.

Advances in sensor miniaturization are increasing the global popularity of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing applications in many domains of agriculture. Fruit orchards (the source of the fruit industry chain) require site-specific or even individual-tree-specific management throughout the growing season—from flowering, fruitlet development, ripening, and harvest—to tree dormancy. The recent increase in research on deploying UAV in orchard management has yielded new insights but challenges relating to determining the optimal approach (e.g., image-processing methods) are hampering widespread adoption, largely because there is no standard workflow for the application of UAVs in orchard management. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review focused on UAV-based orchard management: the survey includes achievements to date and shortcomings to be addressed. Sensing system architecture focusing on UAVs and sensors is summarized. Then up-to-date applications supported by UAVs in orchard management are described, focusing on the diversity of data-processing techniques, including monitoring efficiency and accuracy. With the goal of identifying the gaps and examining the opportunities for UAV-based orchard management, this study also discusses the performance of emerging technologies and compare similar research providing technical and comprehensive support for the further exploitation of UAVs and a revolution in orchard management.

This paper presents a collaborative system made up of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and an aerial robot, which is applied to real-time frost monitoring in vineyards. The core feature of our system is a dynamic mobile node carried by an aerial robot, which ensures communication between sparse clusters located at fragmented parcels and a base station. This system overcomes some limitations of the wireless networks in areas with such characteristics. The use of a dedicated communication channel enables data routing to/from unlimited distances.

Real-time object detection based on UAV remote sensing is widely required in different scenarios. In the past 20 years, with the development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), remote sensing technology, deep learning technology, and edge computing technology, research on UAV real-time object detection in different fields has become increasingly important. However, since real-time UAV object detection is a comprehensive task involving hardware, algorithms, and other components, the complete implementation of real-time object detection is often overlooked. Although there is a large amount of literature on real-time object detection based on UAV remote sensing, little attention has been given to its workflow. This paper aims to systematically review previous studies about UAV real-time object detection from application scenarios, hardware selection, real-time detection paradigms, detection algorithms and their optimization technologies, and evaluation metrics. Through visual and narrative analyses, the conclusions cover all proposed research questions. Real-time object detection is more in demand in scenarios such as emergency rescue and precision agriculture. Multi-rotor UAVs and RGB images are of more interest in applications, and real-time detection mainly uses edge computing with documented processing strategies. GPU-based edge computing platforms are widely used, and deep learning algorithms is preferred for real-time detection. Meanwhile, optimization algorithms need to be focused on resource-limited computing platform deployment, such as lightweight convolutional layers, etc. In addition to accuracy, speed, latency, and energy are equally important evaluation metrics. Finally, this paper thoroughly discusses the challenges of sensor-, edge computing-, and algorithm-related lightweight technologies in real-time object detection. It also discusses the prospective impact of future developments in autonomous UAVs and communications on UAV real-time target detection.

This letter describes Fields2Cover, a novel open source library for coverage path planning (CPP) for agricultural vehicles. While there are several CPP solutions nowadays, there have been limited efforts to unify them into an open source library and provide benchmarking tools to compare their performance. Fields2Cover provides a framework for planning coverage paths, developing novel techniques, and benchmarking state-of-the-art algorithms. The library features a modular and extensible architecture that supports various vehicles and can be used for a variety of applications, including farms. Its core modules are: a headland generator, a swath generator, a route planner and a path planner. An interface to the Robot Operating System (ROS) is also supplied as an add-on. In this letter, the functionalities of the library for planning a coverage path in agriculture are demonstrated using 8 state-of-the-art methods and 7 objective functions in simulation and field experiments.
